    '850 19 hole cam-cover gasket replace with a 16 hole gasket

***EDIT TO THE TITLE*** '850, can a 19 hole cam-cover gasket be used to replace a 16 hole gasket?

Has anyone tried to use a '82-up valve cover gasket, to replace a '80 GS850 16 hole gasket?
they both look the to be the exact same size and shape, except for the additions of the extra hole in the front near the cam tunnel and the two extra holes at the rear of the valve cover gasket.

It looks like one could just add a "small" dab of gray silicone in each of the three extra holes and mount it up.

If no one has tried it before, I'll let you know how it works out.

ok the title to this post and this post ask two differant questions.

the answer to both is, maybe. permitex ultra grey will be required more for one than the other but good for both.

No, I doubt it will work. The spacing on the two neighbouring bolt holes to the extra hole by the cam chain tunnel are spaced differently than those on the 16 bolt cover and I don't there is enough gasket thickness to make new holes where you need them.

Well I guess I should have posted when I was off the pain medication.

my question is... I want to use the later 19 hole gasket on an earlier bike that originally used a 16 hole gasket. has anyone done that?

Nope, not a good idea. In at least one or two spots, the hole for the bolt would sever the gasket.

If you were really desperate and the Empire was about to destroy your home planet unless you got the GS850 back on the road, then maybe it would be worth trying to adapt the gasket, or make a new one out of some nice thick gasket material.

Back here on planet Earth, just order up a nice new one, maybe even Realgasket valve cover and breather gaskets.
