If it were me I would opt for using the Rotella Diesel engine oil and change it frequently. Maybe a tiny bit of Seafoam. Be sure to clean the centrifugal filter each change because it'll catch the loosened up sludge. You don't have to remove the side cover to put the filter back on. I use a small bamboo skewer to catch the chain and hold it up while pushing the filter back in and to the right. You might have to fiddle with it a bit but you can get the chain back on the sprocket and then replace the center shaft.

is there a oil tank or oil pan where oil would sit and collect? can this be easily removed? Point being, this is where most of the crud will be and if it can be removed and cleaned that will remove most of the crud in there, and let the oil clean the stuff you can't get too.

Like on the GS if you pull the oil pan and clean it, you remove 90% of the goop that lives in the motor allowing the oil to better clean other areas.

thanks for the skewer tip....someone described it as being like a gynaclogist....funny analogy, and apt. i have the side cover off now for polishing but will try the chopstick method at the next oil change.

also, dropping the oil pan is a really good idea.....i am just so wary of opening up pandoras box....in that, the thing ran before i got it....and i fear finding more and more to do until it is winter again and my wife still hasnt ridden the thing and i decide to tear it down completely for a restoration and she freaks out and......

        nahhh, surely that wont happen....

I've used the car version of this with good results. I tried to find the website where a guy used in a seriously gunked up Nissan 240. He was skeptical to say the least, but the photos were impressive. I couldn't find the page.

The photos on the front page of the auto-rx page might be from his test.

              this looks interesting.....

also, i did end up dropping the oil pump on the honda, gave it a good cleaning and some new gaskets....now just waiting on some long stainless socket cap bolts to button her up and press the button.....

I second the auto-rx used it in my TDI and it lowered my oil consumption from ring pack cleaning. The guys over at BITOG are fans of this stuff and that says a lot because their a bunch of sceptics. Dan

The best news is this shouldn't do any harm. I've been kind of following the product for a couple of years after hearing about it at bobistheoilguy.com, which is the same place you did. Auto-rx is commercially connected to that forum and negative remarks are 'not common' if you catch my drift.
I wonder how true this statement is?

Nessism any info on a bitog/auto-rx connection?

a little update. i have been working on the honda, getting her cleaned up (not really that dirty, but a little polishing don't hurt!) and tuned up (valve adjustment, carb tuning etc. and she was really running nice, sewing machine smooth, without a single oil leak.

i decided to give the auto rx a try, against my better judgment.

10 miles later, the bike starts puking oil out of everywhere.

now, i realize that my oil seals are probably (no, not probably, they are almost 20 years old, i have the documentation from the engine rebuild completed in 1982) old and dried out. and the head cover gasket is the same age. but i was assured that this product (in emails from the owner) wouldnt do anything to my old seals, ie, make them leak.

i dont blame auto rx, it is my own damn dumb fault. but, unless you are prepared to do a complete engine rebuild, i would caution against using this product on an old motorcycle. if it aint broke, DONT FIX IT. lesson learned, and i wont be trying it in my GS.

I added auto-rx to my '81 650G a few weeks ago and am almost to the oil filter change interval. Haven't had any oil leakage, burning, etc. I learned about it on an Audi forum when looking for sludge removal ideas. Worked wonders in the Audi and I've high hopes for the bike.
