    Pre road trip problem!

How do the gremlins always know?

First off and before this gets buried in the post, if there a carb or brake spray cleaner that is safe for the rubber in the carb? (NOT the diaphragm) Also if I pull the carbs do I NEED to resynch if I don't take the rack apart? My carbtune is in NY and I'm in GA.

    ----

Last weekend I rode down to Fort Rucker and back and had my first ever oil leak. Luckily it was just the shift indicator switch o-ring and was an easy fix.

Yesterday I tweaked the mix screws because I think the bike may have been not fully up to temp the last time. I must have been pretty close though, all the screws ended up within 1/8 turn of where they were before I started. After this I gassed up and rode @50mi to see a friend and then came back later that night. On the ride down things were perfect but <2mi after leaving her house the bike backfired leaving a traffic light.

After the backfire she was running but rough and would rev freely but clearly was missing under load. I pulled into a parking lot and the engine died and didn't want to restart with a couple of short tries so I made a call and got out the flashlight and tools.... after I got off the phone (<5min) I tried to start once more and she fired right up and ran well enough to ride home on the highway. There was still some missing but it was minor, slight enough that I wasn't always sure if it was bucking, pavement texture or paranoia. There was also a LOT of jumping from the tach. Its had a slow spot around 6000rpm for about a year but this was more erratic jumping.

Today I pulled the plugs and 1,3,4 are all good and the same with light grey to very light tan electrodes and tips. #2 is more on the lean side and looking into the cylinders I can see 1,3,4 all have a light uniform carbon buildup but #2 looks like the same carbon layer has a bad case of "fish eye" like you see in paint sometimes.

I also drained the gas from the float bowls using a cut down coke can as a pan and got a little debris from all four bowls. I just cleaned the bowls and checked the jets within the last 1500mi or so and they were spotless then so I'm guessing my petcock screen may have punctured somehow. I could see a few tiny paint chips that were too big to make it past the screen for sure.

So, backfired once and ran rough until it sat for a few minutes, #2 looks like its been pretty lean in comparison to the others, slight debris in the carbs, tank vent isn't it- loose cap didn't help and the tach is suddenly jumping.

    Any ideas? :[

    Hi Mr. Macmatic,

I hope you don't mind a few words from a rookie.

Your tach just may need lubrication. Spray some lube down the cable. Then remove your tach gauge, turn it upside down and put a few drops of household oil in the cable input and let it settle in. I've used WD-40 with success too, but it doesn't last as long.

It also sounds like you need to take some tank cleaning and carb cleaning time, and perhaps a new petcock?. A stop-gap measure might be to install an inline fuel filter to keep the tank gunk out of your carbs. Be sure to get a "gravity feed" fuel filter, like those used in lawn mowers. Automotive fuel filters will be too restrictive as they require a fuel pump.

Best of luck on your trip!

    Thank you for your indulgence,

    BassCliff

(edit) Is it normal to feel pulsing in the fuel line as well as the vacuum line? I don't know if I've ever pinched the line before... I have a steady pulsing in the fuel line, normal or sign of something hinky with the petcock?

Thanks Cliff, this bike has an electric tach but I am going to put in a fuel filter. I'm about to head out on a test ride and see how it feels today. I haven't really done anything other than drain the bowls and check the diaphragms, plugs and cylinders.

I might try making #2 1/2 turn richer when I remember which way that is on the screw!

Nope, I guess I forgot to mention that. I drained the fuel from the bowls and about a quart from the tank on prime with the petcock slightly downhill so water would collect and didn't get even a single bead of water.

How about the mix screws and the fuel line pulsing? I think I've sussed out from the carb diagram that out is rich and in is lean but I'm still wondering if the pulsing fuel line is normal. I guess its probably normal for vacuum to pulse the diaphragm and so pulse the fuel on the other side.

Come to think of it my mix screw question must be answered in the carb rebuild section...
I told y'all I'm not really with it today!

Well I tool the bike out and flogged it for about 45min. I'm lucky that even though I'm in the metro area I know where there is a 1/4mi of two lane running along the highway that has been dead ended so it really doesn't get traffic.....or cops.

Lots of hammering the bike up and down there and all seems to be well other than the clutch slipping a little at the max power and load I could make. I wish I'd found something definitive but I did find the signal generator lead plug every so slightly loose in the socket (the lock tab is broken off) so I threw a wire tie on it. Could have been the problem I guess even though it was only out <1/8in.

I'm going to put on a quick 100mi tomorrow and then change the oil and load up if nothing crops up on that trip.

So is the pulsing on the fuel side not normal or is this in relation to another symptom?

#2 lean? Check the petcock vacuum line?

Good idea but nope. I replaced it last Fall along with the fuel line and they are both fine.

I went out and put on another 100mi today and it still seems to be running fine. I installed an inline filter and I can see a little debris in there already so I guess the petcock screen must be shot

I actually only put on about 70mi myself, the last 30 I swapped bikes with my friend and rode his '09 Hardley Heritage Softail Class. Pretty fun and a lot more nimble than I expected.....floorboards are too easy to drag though!

Yep, found flash rust in the tank the other day so I put in a fuel filter for the time being.

Is it normal for the FUEL line to pulse? I swear I've asked that four times in three threads in as many days and I still don't know. Fuel line. Pulsing. Normal or sign of a petcock going bad?

Are you sure the motor running isn't giving you the feeling it is pulsing?
Could be the compression stroke on #2 pulsing the petcock diaphragm?
You may need a new petcock?

Well yeah, I'm sure that the motor running is giving me the feeling it is pulsing... the question is whether or not its normal! My theory is that the pulsing is coming from the vacuum acting on the diaphragm but I thought that once it was open it would stay open and flow, not really pulse.

I may need a new petcock but it doesn't leak and I think its opening fully.

...and don't I need to come down before I can flashback?
