My last tire for the VX800 (in July) came from:
They were the only ones who had the oddball I wanted (Shinko 705 dual-sport tire) in stock. However, I was pleasantly surprised by their service and would use them again. They do tell you whether something is in stock or not, but not whether they have one or ten. Shipped the same day, but they're located in Oregon, so shipping to me took three days.
My last set of RoadRiders for the GS (July) came from:
Even with that retarded $5 per tire surcharge, they came out to $165 delivered, which was $40 cheaper than anywhere else. I also like how they put the stocking levels on their web site -- if you're in a hurry, it's great to know they actually have the tires in stock. None of that surprise backorder crap. Located in Minnesota, so standard shipping to me is two days, and they ship the same day up to 8:00 pm. That's pretty handy sometimes!
My set of RoadRiders before that (May) came from:
Best deal overall at the time, and prompt, excellent service. The do indicate if something is out of stock. They ship from various warehouses, so the amount of time it takes for something to arrive is variable. Wide selection, and they have a nice little selector that will show you all the tires in a certain size.
My last set of tires for the VX800 (last November, dual-sport Avon Distanzias for the VX800) came from:
Without question, TU has the most tires available in oddball sizes and configurations. If you need something strange, chances are they are the only source. Their delivered prices are normally not the absolute cheapest, but usually very close. The web site does not list stocking levels, but you can call and ask if you're in a hurry. I've ordered from TU many times in the past simply because standard shipping from their Dayton OH warehouse to Indy is overnight. Once in a while, they'll send a tire from another warehouse, which might take an extra day. Always excellent service.
I can no longer recommend southwestmototire.com -- limited selection on tires for older machinery, I've had service problems, and they've recently changed hands. They're also located in Arizona, so shipping is a minimum of three days to me. They're mostly interested in selling the high-volume stuff in standard sizes for modern machines, so their aggressive pricing means they're worth a look if you have a modern bike.
