I use a very light touch of synthetic chassis grease (royal purple) on them.
Material = Nitrile (Buna-N), 70 Durometer. This is the ideal material for this application.McMaster-Carr is the complete source for your plant with over 595,000 products. 98% of products ordered ship from stock and deliver same or next day.
Standard: Recommended for use in oil applications due to its good resistance.Last edited by rustybronco; 08-15-2009, 05:26 PM.

Just because it works in airplanes does not mean it's right in motorcycles.
In this case, the silicone (either spray or paste) would work well, but rather than go searching for some specialized product like the paste, simply use a drop or two of oil. I don't think it would really matter very much whether it's motor oil, gear oil, 3-in-1 oil, sewing machine oil, whatever, you just need something to let the o-ring slide into its housing.
Personally, I use a light synthetic oil, but mainly because that's what came in the 1.5 fl. oz. squeeze bottle with a fine tip that will easily dispense a fraction of a drop, if necessary.
