    Removing spark plug wires from coils

    Any advise on how to remove the remnants of spark plug wire that remains in the holes in the stock coils on my 80 gs1100 16v? I've tried screwdrivers, xacto knives etc. I don't want to bugger up the little screw at the bottom. Maybe boiling in water or using some sort of solvent to dissolve it.
    I have my new Dyna wires ready to go on.

    I'd try working around the outside of the recess hole in the coil, the electrical contact screw is in the center so you can freely work the outside without risk to the coil. If you get a pick tool and dig around the outside you "hopefully" can free the old wire around it's outside and then unscrew it from the peg in the center. Boiling the coil sounds like a bad idea since you don't want that much water on an electrical part. You could try heating the wire with a hair drier or maybe a heat gun but watch the heat so you don't cook the coil.

      maybe I should pour a little lacquer thinners down the holes and leave it over night. It would probably eat the remaining rubber.

        Burn it out with a blow torch.
        1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.
        1985 GS1150ES stock with 85 Red E bodywork.

            Not heating the coil, just burning the wires.
            Shouldn't take long enough to heat anything else very much.

              I just used a little piece of stainless steel welding wire to pick mine out.
              Once you start getting little chunks out you are away, just take your time.

                  Use a drill bit. The little rubber peices will wrap themselves around it as you rotate the bit. Just make note of how far into the hole you dont wanna go.

                    Hi Mr. nastyjones,

                    Do you have a dremel tool and a little grinding wheel? Someone posted up a nice series of pictures when he replaced his spark plug wires in his coils. I wish I could find that thread again. Then again, replacing the coils with better aftermarket parts isn't that expensive.

                        When I did mine, I found there was sealant down the side of the wire inside the recess in the coil body and that was the only thing holding the wire in there. I worked a dental pick down the sides to break the wire away from the coil body in the recess and once I'd removed enough of it, the wire pulled out really easily.

                        When refitting the new wires, make sure you put some high temp RTV in a ring around the wire about 1/2" from the end. Then as you push it into the recess to seat it on the spike at the bottom, the RTV will remake the bond between the wire and inside the recess in the coil body. After that a small bead around the top to prevent moisture is all I did.
