Need new Stator for 78 GS750

RM Stator (recommended and used vendor by BassCliff) does not appear to have a new stator for my 78 GS750. They have stators for 78-80 GS550 and for 78-80 GS1000. Will either of these fit? Any other vendor suggestions?

Any help from you all is greatly appreciated!

Your bike has the famous 12 pole stator which is unique to that model I think. Sounds like a great excuse to wind your own!

Have you done the stator checks ?? my 850 uses the same stator , I have 46K miles on my bike, stator is Original.

I did have a note for stator rewinds ??? tim@tpe-usa.com this is an unknown! If it has at least 60-65 VAC output I would say it is good, not replace it. Use a newer style combo regulator

sqdancelynn-sure did. check out the prev thread that spawned this one.

Nessism - no offense, but I am quite the reluctant mechanic. I have tons of things I would rather do. I have abs NO desire to "wind my own". Can't I just buy a new one or one that someone else has "rewound on their own"?

No one that I know of has or makes a replacement for the 12 pole (which incidently were used in all the kickstarter models that I am aware of) I have a few good ones but you're gonna be hard pressed to get me to part with one of them for this very reason. The alternative is to either hunt one up on eBay, rewind your own (not tough just a matter of understanding the process and repeating a pattern) OR remove and replace your charging rotor with an 80-81 850 rotor and then you can buy a new replacement from RM or Electrosport or whomever.

I contacted RM stator and Ricks this spring and i they said they could get me a 12 pole stator for my '79. Ricks also said they rewind stators too, something like $70-$80.

Makes me wonder if they were going to send me an 18 pole instead of the 12.

PM chuck hahn http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/member.php?u=18277 He might still have a used 12 pole stator.

                Just for information.

I have an old Haynes manual for my 78 GS750, that says that they used either Denso or Kokusan alternators on the GS750.

Also it says the alternator was modified after engine number GS750-44985, and the stator from one type will not fit the rotor of the other.

                Footy.

                  Thanks for all the advice.

Is there any way to TEST a used stator off the bike (ie not while running as in Stator Papers?). I asked this qq before and never got an answer, so I assume not, and therefore I am leery of used. Since mine seems to look fine, my inclination is have it tested first to confirm it is bad before trying to hunt down another one, used or not.

I'm thinking a call from me to RMstator is in order. Any other thoughts?

Really? I'll have to look that up. I don't have the haynes only the shop and clymer and the only mention of ND vs KD is in the ignition. Certain models used the Nippon Denso style condensor plate and some the KD plate. They aren't interchangeable but I've not seen anything regarding the rotor or stator. I will have to look it up.

Well I've found that usually a bum stator will have a strong burnt almost coffee smell to it. Or burnt sugar maybe. But that's not an acurate test I suppose. Also you can test for an open in the stator but that's about the only static tests I know outside of the bike. I'm sure one of the charging system gurus will know more.

i have a 77 750 12 pole stator that i am going to test out on my 79 850. I am not going to take the stator off the cover. I hope the cover fits onto my bike. It may not be the correct way but i'm gonna give it a try.

As TCK said, if it doesn't smell burnt, just check the resistances of each of the windings. then check for a shorted to ground (I.E. the metal part of the stator) on each of the phases, just like if it were installed.

This is a Haynes manual i bought around 83-84 when i first aquired my GS750, It covers GS550 77 to 79, and GS750 76 to 79. The info i quoted is on page 115 under alternator testing.

I just thought i would pass this on here. According to this, my engine runs the later "modified" alternator, but it does not elaborate on what this mod was exactly?

I don't care what checks you have done... Go back and disconnect the stator wires from the circuit... Then start the bike and measure the AC voltage output of the stator measuring from one stator wire to the others 1,2,3--
                              1 to 2 1 to 3 2 to 3 should read a minimum of 60 VAC
