    Now I have done it!

    Just put new seals in the fork of my '79 GS850. Putting the front wheel back on I managed to strip the threads on one of the studs.

    How bad is this? Obviously I will have to remove the damaged stud but how hard is that going to be? Should I heat the lower fork?

    Not hard. grab onto it with vice-grips and remove it. then replace the stud with a new one. (I used an intake manifold stud on the Honda )

      Meh, everyone does this sooner or later. I think Suzuki made these studs (and the ones on the oil filter cover) out of pressed cardboard and cheddar cheese.

      You can get new 8mm studs at any real hardware store -- Ace, Do It Best, etc. (not Meantards, bLowes, or Home Despot) and at many real auto parts stores (the kind with grubby grumpy greybearded real parts guys, not the chains with teenaged twits up front).

        Exactly the same over there huh? Our local GGG guy is known as 'Dirty Doug' precisely because of the first G.

                Scruffy hair or lack of same is difficult to determine in GGG RPGs found in the wild, since the plumage is usually covered by a grimy cap.

                  The stud in now out. It wasn't all that bad. Now I just need to find a replacement.

                    The part you need is 09108-08142, number 7 on the fiche GS850G 1982-1983. The cost is $1.59, and pay shipping charges. Or go to your local Ace Hardware and buy one there, 8MM X 30MM (I think)
