with proper voltage going to the coil and nothing coming out of it, then yes the coil is suspect.

I thought you had the same resistance measurements on both coils?

    (I'm leaving for home...)

If the primary resistance is not around 5 ohmn (OEM coil), then the coil is shot...

If you measure 10 ohms on the primary then the coil(s) shot...

actually, i take that back, i am getting 2.5-3.5 for each. (my ohmmeter was on the wrong setting).

what i did notice, was that the wires from the suspected bad coil were switched- the bullet connectors were spliced and flipped. when i try to hook up the orange/w from the coil to the incoming power (O/W), it blows a fuse. when the bike was running, it was hooked up with the switched wires.

Those numbers sound like aftermarket coils... are these stock coils?? What color are they?

The coils are inter-changeable, only the input plugs are different so you can discern between the 2/3 & 1/4 leads...

What happens when you plug your "good" coil (1/4) into the feed that was switched?? Might be a good idea to double check all the connections & make sure they're connected correctly...

                good luck

i just ordered a coil. I'm thinking that the hack who worked on it before me switched the wires because it kept blowing fuses when it was hooked right - because of an internal grounding issue. which would also explain why he didnt bolt the coil back onto the frame. I will hook up the ebay one when it gets here and go from there. Thank you all for your support and I'll keep ya informed.

Oh yeah, the coils are grey - i'm pretty sure they are stock.

Hells yeah! got it runnin' - except it dies when you give it gas and only stays running with the choke on (turns out, the 2-3 coil was bad even though it ohmed out OK). The #3 exhaust pipe isnt getting hot either. As soon as you give it gas, it dies. It sounds like it takes in a big gulp of air then dies. Where is a good place to start at? BTW, i just rebuilt the carbs, so my adjustments are prolly all off.
