        Found the link but the thread seems to be dead

        It's smoke that make electronic components work.
        Every time I've let the smoke out by mistake, they never work again.

          coils without plug wires!

          Nice pictures, so the plug wires can be replaced on the Coils? Do they screw in like the caps? I thought they were made right into the coil somehow.

            Hi,

            You can gently scrape away the epoxy with an exacto knife until the wires pull out away from the coils. Then replace the wires, being sure the barbs in the coils penetrate the core of the wires. Then epoxy the new wires back in place.

              Yep, like BassCliff says. The wires can be removed by cutting the existing epoxy away with a knife. I also used a dental pick to get further down in the recess the wire disappears into, there's epoxy down in there too and I couldn't pull the wire out until I'd dug out further down. Just be careful, keep at it and they will eventually just pull straight out.

              When inserting the new ones, put a bead of high temp RTV around the wire about 1/2 inch from the end before you push the cable in. That'll help keep the wire fixed in position then finish up with a small bead around the top where the wire enters the coil body.

              The wire just pushes down on the spike in the recess, it's not threaded like the plug caps.

                Very helpful

                I would love to put new spark plug leads on my coils, Now I know how. When I held my #3 plug lead while the bike was running,( on the coil that I replaced,) I would get a slight shock, that's just holding the lead with it installed on the plug. I thought I may be losing voltage on the way to the spark plug. So far replacing the the coil has cured the problem, of the #2 & #3 cylinders taking break while going down the road. But I like to do anything that makes her more dependable. I have also made the mistake of holding the lead from #2 while pulled off the plug and cranking the engine over! I got a much stronger bite from that!
