    850L exhaust question

    Hi,

As most of you know (because I talk about it all the time ) I've almost completed repairing my bike after my accident. A very generous member donated his unused GS850GL exhaust which I fit onto my bike, a GS850GT.

Mr. 82Shafty noticed that the center is not opened up like the exhaust on his 1100L. Is this normal for an 850L exhaust? Should I drill it out? Is this a desirable mod? I haven't started the bike yet but I'm getting close. I was thinking of syncing my carbs very soon while I'm waiting for the rest of my parts to arrive. Thanks for your time.

    Thank you for your indulgence,

    BassCliff

jetting should be the same (115's). I vote no drill...
but you can drill it and re-jet if you would like to.

That's the way they are on the 850.

It will be noisy enough, compared to your previous exhaust, I don't think you will want to dril it out and make it even louder.

It might not be so much the volume of noise, it's more the quality (or lack thereof). I don't care much for the sound (that's what's on my wife's bike) and would like to find a set of G pipes or another quiet 4-into-1 system like #2 son has.

Not sure what Rusty is talking about there with the 100s, the stock jetting on an 850 has 115 mains.
The only thing that had "100" for a value was the idle speed tolerance.

I'm not a fan of the "L sound" either, but would not mess around with drilling or such monkey business.

i had the stock g pipes on my 81 850 (until they got trashed) and loved the sound of them. after they were messed up a friend welded a set of L mufflers on and i didnt really notice much of a difference in sound. it was a bit quieter but i figured it was because of the lack of leaks. but anyways. i can look around my house and see if i have either of the mufflers still. but in all honesty, how much is it going to matter if you change them? will the ride be any more fun? probably not. i know that the sound of the exhaust is kind of a big deal to me, but i would just be happy to ride right now. i say get her running and on the road and tuned properly and then worry about the exhaust. but dont cut up a perfectly good exhaust. sorry if none of this makes sence. im exhausted haha

              Thanks guys,

If that's the way this exhaust is supposed to be, then I'll just leave it that way and ride. I did like the sound of my stock G exhaust. But this one will do just fine and get me back on two wheels. Thanks all.

Cliff, I also noticed that on your "new" pipes when 82 Shafty mentioned it. Do you know what year the pipe you have came off of? I did look at my 82 850 and it has the center hole open and the outers look to be semi "plugged". If I get a chance I will post a pic of them later tonight. I also looked at the other bikes in the fleet the other day and they are all like the 82 with the center hole open. What do the numbers on the side of the pipe say?

                  Hi Tim,

My benefactor said the exhaust is from an '80 model 850GL. I'll take a closer look at the information stamped on them when I get home tonight. Thanks for your help.

I wonder if that was part of the minor changes between 81 & 82?. Possibly a CV/VM change in the pipe? I doubt even then it will make much of a difference.

You could always change to a V&H pro pipe with no baffle, Yeah baby. The neighbors would love ya.

nothing tech to add but wanted to say that L pipes look much better on that bike than the stock pipes, imo . i have a set that i'm planning to put on one day, but have to have headers built for them first.

mine are of a 1000L and have the center hole open and the rest of the holes "semi-plugged" as mentioned above

In regards to the 850L, there was no CV/VM difference.

The L did not appear until 1980, the same year as the VM carbs.

And, ya know what? I'm gonna have to retract my previous statement.

I just looked at a picture of my wife's mufflers and saw that the center is open and the outer holes are open, but have a plate right behind them.

                          Thanks Mr. psyguy.

Yeah, they don't look bad, just different. I can't really see them when I ride anyway.

Thanks for the picture Steve. I'm sure my pipes are in their original configuration, no sign of any modification. We'll see what it sounds like when I start her up. I'm sure I'll just love to her it running again.

Yup, on my 81 GL, the center hole is open. Doesn't look like it's been drilled.

Cliff, mine is also the same as the picture Steve posted. As far as the numbers on the pipe they are X GS850GL A X GS750GL X. The X's have a semi circle closing them in on the top and bottom. I would guess the pipe is the same for the 750 two valve motors & 850GL's although they quit making the 750L in 81 per the parts fiche and I do not think they ever made a 750GL.
