Ducati exhaust cans for a GS850G or GSXR750?

I'm looking for ideas, suggestions, and opinions (if they are thoughtful) about using a set of Ducati exhaust cans from an ST on my '82 GS850G. What about a 4 nto 1 from a GSXR 750?

I'm prepared (at least mentally) for the carbs to need some jetting changes, but has anyone done this or seen it? It appears that mounting will be rather simple.

I'm looking for a different look and sound for my cafe project when I ride the Blue ridge and Tail of the Dragon this fall.

I've used gsxr & bandit exhausts on gs's before but cant comment on the ducati can idea

oil cooled gsxr port spacing is the same as gs so the downpipes fit the head but be prepared to modifiy the collectors & link pipe as some wont clear the sump or stock footrests

gsxr oil cooled 750 downpipes are shorter than 1100's so there may be an issue there depending on which you get

Port diameter is going to be different on the GSXR header. They will only fit '83 and up 700/750 models properly at the port. They are a tight fit under the sump so it kind of rules that out for you. The Duc cans should flow way better than the stock mufflers.

i disagree as ive actually used gsxr pipes on a number of gs's although admittedly not on an 850, what i'm saying is unless the 850 has different sized ports to everything else i've tried them on (which i doubt) then they will fit at the head & work well

as i first posted & you so rightly pointed out some mods will be needed for clearance at the sump & around the footrest area which downpipes did you try ? from what model & year ?

I had a V&H Sidewinder meant for liter class 16 valve GS models, GSX in the rest of the world. At one time that I was going to use it and the pipes were too big to fit the ports on my bike. Then I got a Yosh Duplex that fit the ports properly. It is tight under the sump. It exits high but I had already discarded the stock peg arrangement in favor of lighter rearsets so the bend of the midpipe didn't matter. I mounted the exhaust then attached the rearsets to clear the pipe.

So if i've read that right you had a v&h pipe made for a gsx but it wouldnt fit the gs due to port sizes ?

then you bought a yoshi pipe that fitted ? what was that meant for ?

sorry for the questions but i'm interested as ive had no such problems

remember i'm from the uk so to me a gs is 8 valve & gsx 16 valve

we never got the 700's over here so i'm unsure of the model which engine is it based on a sleeved down 750 gs or gsx or an overbored 650 which did have smaller pipes ?

The Yosh pipe was meant for an air/oil cooled GSXR from the early '90s. The V&H pipe was for a liter class GSX. The V&H was too large diameter at the port and wouldn't work. It was a drag pipe so I wasn't too interested in using it anyway. The Yosh pipe fit the ports correctly. The 700 was just a destroked 750 so as to beat the Harley tariff of the mid '80s.

got it now the yoshi was for an oil cooled gsxr & fitted rather nicely which is what i said in the first place

I'm going with Ducati!

I guess I needed a challenge and I found some Ducati cans very cheap. I ended up buying a set of Ducati Monster cans and a set of SS black cans that both mount on the right side.

So I'm staying with a 4 into 2 setup and now I need to decide which one to use.

Either way, you will most likely need to do some jetting work. No one can tell you where you will end up, as jetting is not a one size fits all thing. You will need to sort your exhaust, then begin the process of figuring out what your jetting needs to be for your set up. It is not that difficult, but you must be methodical and follow a step by step method and take lots of notes on the way.
