Where to purchase oil temp gauge?

I would like to put an oil temp gauge on my 1980 GS750L. Does anyone know where I can purchase such? Thanks. Paul

There is a huge variety in gages. A lot of different sizes, shapes, mounts, mechanisms and prices.

I have one of these, but not installed yet. Just one example from the tip of the iceberg. No problem with the shipping from Taiwan or wherever it was. It seemed like the best bang for the buck for what I wanted.

You guys might want to look for a later model GS oil pressure sensor plate since Suzuki added a lug for a temp sensor. It's a simple matter to drill and tap a hole for the thread in sensor.

Only problem is that won't fit a 80 GS750L; the 16V 750's do not have an rear oil port under the carbs like the 1100's do.

Thanks for the replies. So where might I best drill & tap to insert a tremp probe to get oil temperature. Has anyone you know done this?

The '82 750 4 valve has the oil temp and presssure light sensors on the oil filter cover. I think I have one around here.

Hey Gearhead 13. Thanks for the reply. So are you saying I could switch the oil filter covers w/ the one you have? Then would I just need to purchase a gauge and run the wire to it? Or would I have to replace the sensor too? Let me know if you have the 82 oil cover and what you want for it. Later, Paul

On the 81 GS750 the cover is tapped right in the center. It looks like on the 82 they added a temp sensor in addition to the idiot light. Neither the 82 cover (#9) or the shield (#27) seems to be available.

If you went without the shield, you could just tap right into the cover with an 1/8" NPT tap for the oil temp sensor. Getting the 82 cover and shield from gearhead would be the cleanest way to go.

Hum - do you think I can just replace the "idiot" light sensor w/ temp probe? Better yet, is there a single probe that gives both oil pressure & temp? Wouldn't that be neat? Of the two, I figure temp is the better one to have. Yes/no? Later, Paul

Your sensor cover won't cover both sensors. The plate is a direct swap for your cover. Its just collecting dust and taking up room here if you want it. Im not sure what shipping would be, but maybe $20 shipped?

The reason for the oil temp gauge is that I am concerned about lack of oil flow in my 1980 750L to the top valves and cam. The other day after a trip home from work, the top end was very hot (sizzling). Granted, I rode the bike home fairly had, but never in the past had it been that hot (the jugs were actually smoking). And on first start I am hearing valve tapping noises. I never heard this before either. The noise goes away in a few seconds, but still?? I changed the oil, and even though it was synthetic, it looked scorched. ---- So, I want to monitor oil temp to see what might be going on. Have you ever heard of oil pump or oil flow problems with the 750 TSCC engines? If so, any solutions? Thanks again for your help. This GS forum is great! --Ps: My bike has 22K miles on it. I bought it w 9K. Until now, never had any problems or issues. I might be overacting, but look forward monitoring oil temp, just to make sure!

When was the last time you adjusted valve, not that they are related if you suspect valve train noise due to over heating I would pull the valve cover for an inspection. If it is starting to go you might be able to save it by swapping cams. You wait too long and it will tear up both cams, followers and possibly cam caps and the seats in the head.

An you might consider Oil pressure before oil temp. There are 10mm plugs on both the left and right side to monitor. The one at the bottom of the jugs on the right is prefered.
