    Finding TDC to degree cams

I am rebuilding a 550 and doing the 650 cylinder and head swap. My understanding is to set the cams up to the stock timing before starting the work degreeing the cams. Unfortunately, my bike did not have a timing reference plate over the mechanical advance so I don't have a way to set TDC using factory marks.

So, can I use a positive stop and a degree wheel to find TDC and then make my own reference mark for the timing unit?

    Thanks,
