Just as a total aside (without thread jacking), I'm doing your gauge bulb replacement trick very soon as my tacho bulb is out. So thanks for the right up, will make it fairly simple if I'm patient and take my time with it.

Andre,
You are a master craftsman. Simply amazing work. Thanks for letting me watch your progress (and learn) via all the photos. I've been bugging Dale to put together a project thread for his skunk restore so I can similarly learn.
Thanks for sharing.

I am still running the same LED's. I have changed my modification slightly for some I have done on friends bikes only using superbright white leds. I ordered a pack of 100 of 1.8 -2.2V types and a 100 pack 2.0V zener diodes from Hong Kong on eBay. They are dirt cheap and free shipping as well. Put zener across legs of LED and current limiting resistor in series with LED anode.
Below are links, although not similar specs to mine:
OK then you can also drool over the LED clone of the bulbs at more expense also for sale!

Thanks for the compliment, but I am definitely not a master. I just enjoy a challenge. I also lack the patience to do drone type work unfortunately and cannot sit still doing nothing and will rather be busy while doing nothing!
I took her out on the N2 today, perfect weather, and did a steady 120 km/h. She handles nicely and the wind noise is very much diminished. Had to keep my visor open one click as it was getting a bit hot behind that screen.

And yeah, the ready made one's aren't cheap... replacing all 14 bulbs or whatever there are would be about $100!1982 GS450E - The Wee Beastie

And just who's work do you think I'm trying to emulate? do you really think you'll be able to learn something from me? I don't see how that's possible.
if the 'E' turns out half as good as yours did, I'll be damn well pleased!

Also, did you find 8000 mcd enough or did you go higher? My brief testing tonight showed 8000 was the best out of 1500, 8000, and 20000. The 20000 was too narrow viewing angle even though the spec's for both the 8000 and 20000 were supposed to be 20 degrees.1982 GS450E - The Wee Beastie

I think mine are 8000, but may even be lower.
The Zener is just a protection for the LED as the voltage is not static at 12V and can rise to 15 Volts under normal use and may save the LED's during an abnormal overvoltage situation. This allows me to make 6V and 12V lights for the dash as well. Then again my own on my GS is still running with only a resistor without any failures to date.

Eventhough I think these fairings are abominations normally, I admire the time and effort you've spent into making your bike look beautiful with it. Really awesome work!

I think I'm just going to get what seems a reasonable deal off eBay as there are some that come with free resistors or postage etc. Given last night's testing, if I go somewhere around 10000 - 13000mcd I'll be happy.
As for sizing the zeners, did you just aim for as close to or slightly less than the LED's forward voltage drop?
As far as overvoltage goes, the ones I've looked at have peak current at 70mA or so, so they should cope with 15v or so no troubles, but I'll probably spec. the resistor for 13.2v.1982 GS450E - The Wee Beastie

Finally the new edging is fitted! Next is the Bagman bracket some time later.
Thought I should update my signature at this point as well!

Excellent stuff again Andre!
It looked great as it was, but that edging definitely gives it a nice extra touch to make it just right.1982 GS450E - The Wee Beastie
