GS1000 Skunk Project
So i went out into the garage today just to start exploring the bike and the first thing i noticed about the bike which i'm hoping you can give me some insight. i opened up the seat compartment and saw what pretty much looks like a home made air-filter wrapped in egg crate foam stuff. is this normal? haha and as soon as i took the egg crate out the air filter fell. what do you think?

Yup, looks like some homemade stuff.
My Skunk was missing the same part and ended up finding it from a very nice gentleman from this forum for a really good price.
Here's one on ebay but its way over priced. Search and ask around, you'll find one for half that price.

It is easier if you get the K&N filters to go along with the K&N jet kit that you will need

Lots of stuff to do before you need to worry about the fuel system.
What SqDancerLynn1 is saying, if you put pods on it you'll have to mess with the jetting to get the bike to run right. Jetting can get kinda tricky for a newb.
In the case of pods cheaper is not always better.sigpic

Ape pods are cheap, but still decent quality. Buy the time you add in a jet kit though it's an expensive swap when all you need is the rear airbox and a new air filter.Ed

So I've been on the hunt for a rear air filter box. In the mantime I'd just like to
Ask a few questions. Say I were to buy the pod air filters. What goes into
putting in a new jetting kit? I think I would really prefer that look over a boxed up air filter.
Also I'm not very motorcycle savy but I really really wanna learn. Would it be wise to
Take the engine out of the motorcycle and clean everything or would that put me way
Over my head?
Thanks in advanced guys

You are going to have to tear into the carbs (or have someone here like Chef1366 do it for you) anyway so putting in a jet kit at that stage is no more work.
The settings for DynoJet kits & K&N/Ape pods are well known so you should be able to get the settings pretty much spot on first go....
Money is the real issue. DJ kits are about $120 & K&N's will set you back about the same (Ape's are about $60)
You'll want an O ring kit & inlet Boot O rings from www.cycleorings.com too... don't bother with a rebuild kit, just get yourself some new gaskets from www.z1enterprises.com or one of the other suppliers like www.bikebandit.com etc1980 GS1000G - Sold
