The valve cover fairy showed up bearing gifts this afternoon...

It looks like you were correct Ed, that emblem was the best looking of the three. This looks like the set I'll be rehabbing sometime in the future.
I'll take the cylinders and pistons with me to work tomorrow as I didn't get to measuring them over the weekend and other than throwing the oil pan in the parts washer to soak, not much else to post.

Frank Z will be PMing you concerning your sand blasting the cover while on the head. He has that used Veshra gasket we replaced yesterday..Its all in one piece and not torn. We were thinking it would be a good setup gasket if youd like to have it..MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)

Chuck, I have a spare really thin aftermarket gasket and plan on bolting my old cover on the cylinder head when I blast it. But I've a bit of measuring components long before that comes about.
I'm hoping this head isn't bad like the ones Ed had.
I just looked the starter clutch and gear I got from Ed, readying it and the rotor so I can take it to work to clean and assemble it.Last edited by rustybronco; 04-23-2012, 06:08 PM.

Is it split from the jugs? have you gotten a peek at the valves from below at least? How did the look..cooked pretty bad?MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)

I removed the head first then I pulled the cylinders.
At a casual glance, the pistons, rings, cylinder and valves look good. The rings aren't stuck, no scoring on the sides of the pistons, the carbon on top the pistons and heads of the valves aren't too black or heavy, no evidence of oil burning. So, other than the two broken starter clutch bolts and part of the third bolt coming up missing, which more than likely took out the starter gear bearings, everything looks relatively good.
