I haven't got to measuring the basket yet. Off hand as it looks, I think it will be fine.

I was thinking about grooves dug into the hub and basket fron the friction plates being slammed around..ive seen some grooved so badly the plates would hang up and not slide at all making the clutch not even work. And that head looks pretty nice to me...short of the grease baked into every crack. Fill up somehting the haed will set in flat and use a full bottle of MR.Clean and just enough water to cover it. Let it soak a day or two while your doing other stuff. The potion will soften the grease in all the tiniest of places making clean up a lot easier. We use to take a 5 gallon bucket and do this with our coveralls when we were done pulling an engine or splitting a pack on the tanks. they would wash up real nice after a good soak.

Std bore spec's are 2.755~2.756 with a service limit of 2.759

All the cylinders measure within .0005 of 2.756 and within .0005' ish in both out of round and taper.

Now I need to clean up and measure the pistons.

The clutch basket it's self is very serviceable. It will need a bit of work done as the springs are slightly loose.

The worst looking one on the drive side.

This is what most of the rest look like.

The back side is not all hammered out and no broken springs.

'Postmortem' thoughts are that loose and broken starter bolts is what killed this bike.

              No problems there!

No wonder the pistons don't show any blow-by.

I was pretty pleased when I ran the gauge up and down the bores.

Clutch spring free length spec is 1.535~1.59 with a service limit of 1.510

                The clutch springs measured...
                1.534
                1.525
                1.533
                1.535
                1.527
                1.535

It all looks good so far, but there's still lots more to measure.

looking like all we need is to get you the crank. Maybe just freshen up the drive side ones in the basket with a mill smooth file??

And an intake camshaft as well.

                      (So far that is)

                        And a piston...

The right end of the wrist pin in the picture it galled.

It's getting a bit closer to cutting my losses with this particular engine

Thanks Ed, I may take you up on the offer for the piston. Right now, I'm trying to decide the best avenue to take with this one. It needs a crank, an intake cam and a piston at the very minimum. That doesn't even include what I may find wrong the cylinder head either. It also doesn't include the time needed to spend on de-corroding all the parts or repair the broken boss for the chain cover. No, I'm seriously thinking it's time to cut my losses on this engine.

I've asked Chuck to check into the spare engine for me.
