In the grand scheme of a full bike restoration, a few engine parts are no big deal. Push though my friend. Your cylinder is in excellent condition, and that's a critical part to assure your engine seals well. Hopefully the head will clean up well too.Ed

Charging onwards...
Piston ring end gap (Top, 2nd) measured 1" down the bore squared up with a piston.
0.15~0.35mm std with service limit of 0.65mm
#1 measures 0.32mm
That's it for tonight folks. Tomorrow is washing up transmission parts day.

Those bores and rings are fine, so no worries on the jugs. That head will be fine with a freshening of the seats and clean up the valves and add new springs ( if the originals dont measure right ). Youre at the finish line now.MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)

Washing up, de-corroding, inspection, measuring, looking up parts, obtaining parts, scraping gaskets off, chasing threads, etching the aluminum, taping off parts, painting, removing broken stud, welding on a new boss, going through starter, assembling...

Things like the front sprocket nut and washer being all hacked up, sleeves, seals, orings and 'plugs' all stuffed up. Start clutch shim in addition to the crank, piston and camshaft.
What really gets me is the camshaft. Did they forget to harden these things? The lobes look perfect on it, yet it's worn undersize. That's what really got me...

Cam shaft may have been defective from the factory and it just slipped thru the QC that particular day...My dad worked for GM engine assembly in Bay City MI for many years and said it was an everyday thing to her cams hit the floor. By "finish line" I was meaning in the checking and soerting of the engine. And i was thinking, If someone had a lower case that was cracked or otherwise junk could they cut the section that the cover bolts to and you use the posts off it for transplant??MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)
