Hey Dale, you had an opportunity to look at the frame again in the light of day? Any pesky areas on the underside that managed to hide from the black out treatment? Did you get time to paint the auxiliary parts yet so the bike can start going back together again? Looking forward to seeing more of your handiwork.Ed

Yes I did look at in the light of day and it wasn't pretty. I already hit some spots with 400 and will respray those areas and a few places I missed. but if that doesn't do it for me, I will strip the frame, buy a smaller gun and re-shoot the durn thing. my wife thinks it's good enough and I should leave it alone, but I can't accept a half a$$'d job.
this week I'll start blasting the rest of the pieces and get them ready for paint. the big issue I have right now is what to use paint wise for things like the triple tree. TCK mentioned Duplicolor having a close match, but I question it's durability. I can always have some 2K paint mixed up in a satin and give that a go. I need to think out that issue soon.

Dale...Just a suggestion here. VHT has satin and semi gloss black epoxy as well..try each and see which you like better.. cheap enought for an experiment.MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)

Chuck, I've seen how the VHT epoxy looks. I might take your suggestion and go with it. but first, I need to I need to look at those bits to see if they need reconditioning. the upper triple you sent looks nice just the way it is but I haven't looked at too much else with a critical eye.

I don't like to hear you use the "strip" word. It can't possibly be that bad. Worst case, stuff with Scotchbrite and reshoot. Trust me, I know how it goes.
I was feeling pretty confident with my first S frame, but after I turned it up side down there were several areas that I missed. If you can figure out how to flip the frame over during the spraying process you will be miles ahead. Don't want to suggest too much since I'm sure you did better than me on my first try...just want to encourage you to keep going.
Oh, and Por-15 Chassis Coat Black is what I used on the semi-gloss parts. It's WAY tougher than rattle can paint, but it's a single stage so it's not to hard to deal with. Pretty good stuff. http://www.por15.com/CHASSIS-COAT-BL...oductinfo/CHG/

Dale I gotta second Ed on the POR 15 stuff here.
I used Blackcote rather than Chassis Coat Black as it's full gloss, and it's impressive stuff!
It's also self levelling so if you're keen (or stupid like me) you can actually brush it on...

If I were to spray this or any other frame I definitely would start the spraying process with the frame up-side-down. when I shot the primer at the house, I had one advantage I didn't have in the booth I had laid cardboard down so I could shoot those areas. in the booth it was a bit harder to spray from the bottom because of the floor grate.
the problem that's troubling me isn't the orange peel, something in the reducer or hardener must be reacting with the original paint that was still left on the frame, causing it to craze in some spots. I had the same problem when I shot the dplf. I thought I had it solved by sanding those areas and spraying more primer, before top coating it. we'll see what happens tomorrow when I get a chance to reshoot the areas I sanded. but if not I won't hesitate to chemically strip it and start over.
so what can I say, either do it right or go home...

Chuck, sandblasting should remove all of it as well if you keep at it.
I didn't and still don't see the need to remove every last bit of it. this is what the metal looked like after I finished sand blasting it. (I wasn't finished when this picture was taken-but you get the idea)
does anyone have a guess as to what paint may have been used in the factory on the frames?

Scuffed up the frame with 400 and a red scotch brite and re-sprayed parts of the frame.
sprayed it with this $17 LPH50 knock off. looks like it saved my butt so far.
Finally... some acceptable looking paint.
