Does this paint require then progressively longer and longer heat cycles to be considered fully cured? If so, are you gonna bake it prior to reassembly? This, if it can be pulled off, would be the best way to bake them and ensure that the rear and lower parts of the cases are good. The jugs, obviously, will be heated very very readily. Thing is to cure it in progressively longer heat exposure to prevent bubbling and ensure a good positive bonding.MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)

Ed, I think it's slightly less brilliant than the factory paint was. Not much less, very close. I really think you would have a hard time finding an off the shelf paint that would match as close.
Chuck, this particular paint was mixed with a catalyst and is rated to 650°. You shoot it, let it cure for XX amount of days and you should be good to go.
It's supposed to be fuel resistant as well. Between fuel resistance and the colour match I don't think it can get any better.Last edited by rustybronco; 08-24-2014, 07:51 PM.

Ivor, The paint is universal aluminum engine paint by Eastwood. You can read up on all the details here > http://www.eastwood.com/ew-ceramic-e...-aluminum.html
There is also a post or two in this thread where 08rangerdan used it on his GS850. http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum...28#post1986128
If you don't care for all the gloss just shoot it a little drier.Last edited by rustybronco; 08-24-2014, 08:38 PM.

I'll take a closer look at the color when I get home tonight, but from what I could tell looking at the valve cover last night and again this morning, this picture appears to best approximate the colour as it appears to my eye.
http://i1184.photobucket.com/albums/...ps5aef4bf3.jpg (the V/C area)
Comparing the cylinder head on my 80 850, it appears to be a different colour than the cases. The upper case looks grey and the cylinder head looks more silver. Does anyone else believe that to be the case also?Last edited by rustybronco; 08-25-2014, 09:19 AM.

Yes, on my 1981 model 850, the upper case also looks more grey and the cylinder head and valve cover look more silver.
However, I think I would prefer them all to rather have the same colour, be it greyish or silverish.Last edited by 2BRacing; 08-25-2014, 10:20 AM.1981 GS850G "Blue Magic" (Bike Of The Month April 2009)

If you must know, I did take a small file to the major defect trying to lessen the flaw. Anymore than what I did would have resulted in a flat spot on the V/C.
(you would be the one to notice it!)

Dale, this is my thoughts exactly. Crankcase and valve cover have a different finish than the cylinder and head. More smooth for one thing. Silver-gray color paint. The cylinder and head are more bright silver. I started typing this last night but deleted the response feeling it was getting too far ahead. The VHT silver is a good match for the factory cylinder and head paint. It won't yellow with heat either.Ed

Ed, you can never get too far ahead for my tastes.
When I was first looking to see what kind of paint to use on this engine, I used Ebay as a guide when trying to color match various paints. I kept coming back to the fact the V/C*, head and cylinders being different than the cases. It doesn't help when you ride every day looking down at the two different colors either.
Looks like I will be picking up some SP127 in the near future.
*unsure if this is an exact match for the 1978 engine cases.

The Nu cast Aluminum has a kind of copperish tone to it Dale..versus the silver aluminum look of the universal Aluminum ( Sp-127 ). I shot that Nu cast on a case and had the stripper on it in less than 15 minutes to get that crap off the block. Threw the can away. Was not impressed by the color by any stretch.MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)
