(VM) for Vintage Motorbike.
Another one followed me home today.
With ALL of the talk about NEW Triumph's and NEW Kawasaki's and NEW BMW's,
I am guessing that I am allowed to talk about motorbikes from the GS vintage years. Maybe?

Here is how she looked when we (GSexpress and myself) picked it up.





Unloaded and in the company of 10 GS's...





She needs some work.
Not as nice as the prizes that Jwhelen picks up but, it was CHEAP!

I finally got around to ordering parts for my "F" today. Completely and utterly unmotivated. It's a frame/swingarm and engine sitting on the floor, and a rubbermaid tote full of parts. Bah.

I thought about hanging on to it and working it into a GS cafe as it's a nicely done one, but it's too wide for a GS, looks goofy. It's on a CB750 pan, still has the hinge brackets and all (which is rare when someone does a cafe seat) so it should be a direct swap. The pan has some superficial surface rust, a wire wheel and a fresh coat of primer and paint and shed be A-1.

Original exhaust too. I've seen more dinosaurs than original pipes on one of them in recent years over here.

The SOHC Fs were treated as the unwanted late child over here until a couple of years ago - you couldn't give them away even though the earlier bikes had rocketed. Prices are well on the move now though. Whatever you do, don't cut up that pipe; I bet you could sell it here for more than you paid for the whole bike.

I had one with that exhaust back in the day. Here in Canada they were called the "Supersport". Mine had bad valve seals, a common problem I understand.

Speaking of which, I am about to ride my '81 GS850G about 70 miles to trade it for a non-running '92 GSX1100G this afternoon.

After playing with the new to me GSX1100G and getting it sorted out and running with parts ordered,
it was time to spend a few minutes on this basket case today.
I cleaned and checked the gaps on the spark plugs, 3 of which were wrong (apparently installed "out of the box" by the PO ),
and sprayed some Amsoil metal protectant into the cylinders to soak.
I checked one of the float bowls to see just how bad the condition of the carbs might be...





As it turned out to look fair, I filled the carbs with Berryman's B-12 Carb Cleaner.
The starter button is broken on the hand control and the PO had added a switch that was just hanging from that location that did nothing with a battery hooked to the system.
There is also a toggle switch located next to the battery box, apparently some kind of theft deterrent.
With the ignition key on, the no oil pressure light lit and so did the neutral indicator.
So, I jumped the solenoid to see what happens.
It stuttered and wanted to start!
In this video, I had to play with the choke that didn't help and finally open the throttle...

Doesn't look like I wasted $100.00, and lunch for GSexpress, or the hour and a half to get it running.

Now, back to the forums to see just what I am doing wrong... LMAO!

Daniel I have a Cycleserv manual for your bike if you want it. Just pay the shipping. I found it cleaning up the garage today then saw this post. Must have been some sort of divine intervention...........
