Heres a tip for doing it in the frame..
remove the tank and coils so your creating some space between the frame and the engine Use the blue painters tape to mask off the seams where the covers meet the cases. Put old socks over all the turn signals. The all around the frame wrap it with aluminum foil. Use the foil around whatever else you can get it around..battery box, rear master cylinders, forks etc etc. Use old rags and tshirts and sheets to cover everything else like the wheels, instruments. Once you have everything masked off and the engine isolated then just paint it and let it sit overnight and unwrap it in the morningMY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)

Chuck, Most paints require a specific ratio of paint to hardener to reducer.
for this example I will use a 4:1:1 ratio. 4:1:1 means 4 parts paint, one part hardener and one part reducer.
two commonly used methods are the mixing cup (shown on the left below) which is marked with different mixing ratios on it (i.e. 2:1 ~ 4:1). what you would do for a 4:1:1 paint/catalyst/reducer ratio using the mixing cup is to add the paint up to the first 2 line under 4:1:1, then add hardener to the #2 in the second column (:1) to the right of the 4 column, then reducer to the 2 line in the third (:1) column. you could start with the #3 or 4 if you required more mixed material, or #1 if you required less. the advantage to this method of mixing is ease of use.
a lesser used method today is to use a straight walled container with a scaled ruler to measure out the parts (shown on the right below). for example, using this method to mix 4:1:1, you would add paint up to the #4 line on one of the four scales (4 parts), hardener to the #5 line (1 part) and reducer to the #6 line (1 part). the advantage of this method is you don't have to keep buying new mixing cups at .50 ~1.00 dollar per cup.
mixing paint is the easy part. properly adjusting the gun (tuning), the distance to hold the gun from the surface being painted, gun speed, ect, those are the things you will need to learn and only comes with practice.

I was hoping to come up this weekend but after being at ACL Music Fest all last weekend and a show to attend this Sunday I've got a long list of honey-do's to take care of Saturday... but I am hoping to at least change the oil on my beast!

Today I got all the plastics washed and treated with Mother Back To Black and hauled all the boxes of parts that i had already cleaned and painted out to the patio. Then the frame was brought out and I started reassembling the bike. I should have her all together by the end of the weekend..at least thats my plans,
