1985 GS450L project
Well I've found another project to go along with my 650.... a buddy had this bike which he laid down in gravel on a corner....it has 17500 miles and from the accident it has bent forks, scraped headlight, bent turn signal, and the master cylinder is scraped a little......but it runs and is ride able.....and he only wants 400 bucks.....so I'm gonna be getting it sometime between now and next Saturday (the 16th)....

so last night i went and picked the bike up and brought it home....its in pretty good shape....just a few things need replaced.
-front forks are bent badly.
-r/f turn signal doesnt work(bulb is blown).
-low beam headlight is out.(bulb?).
-rear brake is soft(needs adjusted).
-choke lever is broken.
but it does start right up and runs....it is driveable but pulls badly....
has 17500 miles.....and for $400 bucks i thought was a pretty good deal...
does anyone know what the psi spec for the air forks is??Last edited by Guest; 06-09-2012, 11:01 AM.

Worked on it for a few hours today......got the ''new'' forks installed......here is a pic of the ones removed.
And a shot of the bike after installing the forks
Also fixed the turn signal and brake light.....adjusted and lubed chain. Which was the loosest chain I have ever seen ......looks like I might need a new chain .....also found that the speedometer doesn't work.....odometer does but nô speedometer...x

Well after riding it it seemed to have an intermittent hanging idle so I removed the Carb and Carb boots to check the orings and found them to be very flat.....and since www.cycleorings.com. doesn't carry a oring kit for my bike I ordered orings from bike bandit I also found a used gauge cluster to replace my non working speedo ......I also have stuff ordered to change the fluid in the ''new'' forks.....

today the used speedometer cluster arrived along with the used choke lever and also a used working headlight. now im just waiting on the carb boot orings and the fork orings to arrive. after that it needs tagged and insured, inspected and then will be ready to ride

whenever i got the bike the front brakes were a little soft. and now after installing new front pads and replacing all the old fluid with new the lever goes the whole way back to the handlebar and you can push the bike if you use some force. im thinking the master cylinder is shot because the caliper works fine. i can get a rebuild kit for 20-30 bucks or a new aftermarket master cylinder for about 60. is it worth rebuilding and has anyone had sucess with that or should i just get the new one.

Tear the MC apart and find out if it is worth rebuilding. It takes all but half an hour to get it off the bike, rip it apart and inspect the bore and the piston. If it's in too bad of shape, then you could do the new one, but hopefully it will be fine and you can rebuild and you won't have to spend twice the price.

So I got the front brake problem fixed with a new master cylinder but have now run on to something else. When riding I'm hearing some noise from the rear wheel area and also when spinning the rear wheel the chain will get tight and then after a revolution or two it gets loose again. I'm guessing that means the chain is junk? ?

Give it a really good clean with some kerosene on a rag and lube it real good then see how it goes.1982 GS450E - The Wee Beastie

ok, well when i got the bike the chain was EXTREMLY loose, so loose you could almost pick it off the sprocket. and it was also bone dry. a new non oring chain is around 25 bucks so i think im just gonna replace it.
