    1980 GS850S Build

Yes you heard right Just got an 1980 850G and i plan on making it looks like the 1000S because that bike was just so darn cool. Im adding a kick starter to the bike (for convenience and coolness), painting the frame black and what not and adding some cool things (just spent 1000 dollars worth of ebay parts last night ) I just couldn't stop shopping for the bike at a certain point i said hey, "im in this i might as well go all the way" LOL.... as of now i have the engine out (not shown in pics) of the frame.. ill keep this thread posted, i do as much work as possible on the good days, right now its just stale out. Any tips, reccomendations, questions, criticsm welcome.

as you can see, this is an absolute rust bucket

    Congrats, how does it run?
I would rethink the Cooley thing, it just ain't right on a shafty. You might just clean it up, get everything working and ride it a while, let it grow on you before deciding about any paint.

If i see a real cool paint scheme to copy off of i'll do that too. any reccomendations would be nice

Add a kick starter to a shafty? Looking forward to watching how you go about that.

wish i could say the idea was mine a friend of mine did it first. I'll post pictures and walk through when we do it. Basically you need the 79' clutch cover, lever, and shaft unit, and also a little metal tab that allows the mechanism to disengage while the lever is comming back on its way up

Easy enough to do, but it all adds weight to the heaviest naked GS ever.

I collected some pics of paint jobs when I was trying to figure out this:

Want me to email them to you? There were some really cool ideas.

              Like this:

I'd add a good Reg/Rec to your list. That or one of the Solid States that is being sold on this site. Too bad you didn't buy a 79' 850, they come standard with a kick start.

Looks like you're missing rebuild kits for the brake calipers and master cylinder plus new stainless steel lines. (Looks like it may have SS lines on the front?) If the brakes are anything like the rest of the bike, they'll need a complete strip down and refurb, probably new pistons in the calipers and master cylinders as well.

As to the stainless steel bolt set, Z1 Enterprises has 'em for the engine. I haven't seen a complete set for the bike, most people either paint theirs or buy new.

Congrats on the beginning of a very rewarding project.

Well, I bought the R1 Calipers they should go right on after making some brackets I may reuse the stainless lines on the bike. However I will definitely have to rebuild the rear brake.... and thanks btw I totally forgot about Z1

Keep in mind that the "solid state" is just a power distribution panel that replaces your fusebox. It is NOT a replacement for the R/R.

If you were looking for an upgrade in the R/R department, you should have gone with a Polaris. Much better function, and it's cheaper, too (about $75, shipped).

Personally, I would consider the VM carbs to be a compromise. I would rather have the CV-type carbs.

There are a few different ones out there that look a lot like the "S" fairing, but will not be nearly as expensive.

Don't worry about anyone trying to convince you to not add a pound or two to the overall weight, if that is what you want to do. I think I probably took it to the extreme, though, by adding GK luggage at the rear and a frame-mount fairing to the front of my 850. How much does it weigh? I don't know, and I don't care.

Looking forward to the rest of the build. Let's see that blue and white (or are you going for the red and white version) 850S.

haha totally, yeah i actually went ahead an got the fairing from the UK it looked WAY better than teh airtech junk. and YES VM Carbs are junk!! thats what i meant lol, cause the other guy said i shoulda got the 79 cause it came with teh kickstarter, but i was saying it dont have the CV carbs though!! As for the polaris r/r wish i woulda known before i ordered it. What are the main advantages of that Power box? I've seen his videos, and it seems cleaner but i dont know the actual advantage over the standard fuse box
