A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

    Oil Filter Stud thread repair

I have my exhaust off, so have plenty of room, no problem fitting the tap wrench in there, unless I am missing something. I can't seem to find a 6mm tap, so this won't be happening today anyway, though

    Oil Filter Stud thread repair

I have a couple T-handle tap wrenches, I think my small one will be the right size, is that what you mean?

    Oil Filter Stud thread repair

OK, I got the two remaining studs out without much difficulty by double-nutting them. They were 6mmx1 all-thread, and were too long. The threads looked ok with a flashlight, but I am having difficulty threading the correct studs in by hand. I can get started in what seems like a good thread...

Coils troubleshooting - still can't get engine started

Are the "wire to wire" measurements actually in kiloOhms? If so, your coil impedances seem to be ok. Do you have an ignitor or points and condenser?

    Oil Filter Stud thread repair

Thanks, guys. I have all three new studs, so will be replacing them all. Are they installed with thread locker? Also, I am assuming that the short end gets screwed into the crank case until it bottoms out at the middle shank. Sounds like there are methods for a lot more damage than mine had, so...

    Oil Filter Stud thread repair

I am in the middle of repairing the threads in the crankcase for the lower right oil filter stud. I just drained the oil to work on the clutch and noticed that the fastener was different in that location than the other two. It seems that a PO had trouble with that stud and drilled and tapped...

    Clutch Cover 3400 ml labels

Thanks, I was beginning to wonder, I have found enough surprises on this thing. Studying the photo picked up something that I did not see with my eyes. It looks like the casting is imperfect in this area. Could it be that on this one, and srsupertrap's that they put a label on those that the...

    Clutch Cover 3400 ml labels

Here are some photos. I believe that I have a 1979 GS750, base model (N), engine number GS750-77052. Who knows, maybe it is a Yamaha XS750 20220501_114701 by Andy Hoover, on Flickr 20220501_115034 by Andy Hoover, on Flickr

    Clutch Cover 3400 ml labels

Bump, I am doing my clutch cover now, and am wondering what most folks do. Mine is a little damaged already. I could mask it, but would rather replace. Or, remove it and make it bare metal?

    1980 GS550 condenser problem

I was leaning toward something being found to be incorrect when you went through everything. As you said, the circuit is pretty simple, really no black magic going on. I am surprised that you had so many condensers fail. Maybe the condensers that we have just aren't like they used to be, as...

    1980 GS550 condenser problem

One more thing as a sanity check? Can you measure the impedance spark plug cap to spark plug cap (1-4, 2-3). Also, measure the impedance of each spark plug to check for infinite impedance tip to ground and 0 impedance tip to center electrode?

How to polish engine case on my GS

From the condition of mine, I would say, yes!

    1980 GS550 condenser problem

Also, for the four condensers that you think have failed: have you tried re-using any of them? Can you tell how they have failed? Open circuit? Short circuit?

    1980 GS550 condenser problem

From post #9: "Whilst the bike is running a known working condenser is connected between the sparking/ misfiring points and everything goes back to normal timing and sparking wise. Disconnect the new condensor and the strobe is all over the place again." Are you using test leads to connect...

How many condensers have failed so far? Also, maybe you have a bad ground.

How to polish engine case on my GS

I have my clutch cover off now and want to do this while I have it off. Do you remove the oil level lens before using the stripper, or just mask it off?

    1980 GS550 condenser problem

Grimly is correct about the condenser voltage as the points open. When this happens and the field collapses in the primary coil the voltage spike is dissipated across the capacitor. So, the capacitor will see high voltage spikes when the points open, but this is a 12VDC system, and the points...

    1980 GS550 condenser problem

Have you tested your condensers? They are just big capacitors, and are unlikely to fail as frequently as you are describing, especially since they only see 12 VDC. Your description sounds more like something is loose mechanically and your "half-circles" that the breaker points are mounted to...

    Drain plug washer

OK, I got the old washer off using a vise, utility blade, hammer, small cold chisel, side cutters, and channel locks in that order. No damage to the drain plug. Probably not worth the time other than thinking that it was the original 1979 plug. Don't tell me if it wasn't.
