Clutch Rod Removal on a 1980 GS450L

ZukiKooki

Forum Newbie
Hello All, I am in the middle of trying to replace the seals that go around my clutch rod and the shifter shaft. (Both left side of the bike near the drive gear). I am unable to get the seal out from around the clutch rod. I had read somewhere if you remove the rod, removing the seal gets a lot easier. However, I can not seem to figure out how the rod comes out. I thought it was supposed to just slide right out. Now I am in the middle of removing the entire clutch basket in hopes I can slide the rod out the other side. If anyone knows a easier way it'd be nice to know.

Thanks in advance.

Do you have a service manual?
I do. I actually went ahead and pulled the clutch basket and the rod came right out. However the seal still will not come out. It seem like it is either set in a groove or attached to something. Also it seems like the seal is metal coated in rubber however I have now stripped all the rubber off mine haha

There were at least two different configurations for that seal. Some engines even had a retainer plate. At this point, you are going to have to dig that old seal out. If you search out info from older threads here that may help you.

I got the seal out. It definitely has a flange on it that was keeping locked into that groove. I havent seen a part in any diagrams for a replacement so I am planning to just press a rubber seal in there. Anyone think this is a bad idea?

That looks waaay big for the clutch rod seal.... Parts diagram shows for the clutch rod... Oil Seal (6X34X8) flanged type part # 09283-06002

Thats the part! It looks big but thats the clutch rod seal. I actually just bought the 09283-06002 flange seal thanks to you puting it in here. Not sure how I am gonna get it in there as I had to battle like crazy to get the other one out but 09283-06002 is identical to what I pulled out.

Late to the party on this one... I don't recall the details as I haven't had to look at mine for a very long time, but the earlier 450s had a single pushrod meaning you had to pull the clutch if I recall correctly. The later models have a two piece pushrod, meaning you can pull the shorter side out from under the sprocket cover. I lucked out and have an '82 model with the two piece, and I'm pretty sure the later model has a retainer plate without a grooved seal meaning it can be replaced without splitting the cases.

On my 82 450 I had a rubber seal and a locking plate with two or three M6 bolts, the bolts were secured with bend over tabs.

Also I had a two piece pushrod which could easily be removed.
