I have the downloaded manual for the GS550 from Basscliffs site and would like to have it printed off as I find hard copy to be easier to use in the garage are there any legal issues with doing this?

I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.
Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Returning Visitors
If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.
If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

A sherriff's deputy once told me that nothing is against the law unless you get caught.
Printing it is no more/less illegal than downloading it in the first place.
Don't worry about the copyright cops kicking down your door and confiscating your computer if all you do is print out a copy for your own reference. If you were burning CDs of the material and selling them on ebay, that'd be a whole different story.

I was planning to get it printed by a shop as getting a 700 page document off of a home printer is not a practical operation ,at least not for me.

Another approach would be to download the document (back it up, of course), then print off the pages as required for the particular job you're doing .....:-k

I would think the legality of it would depend on whether or not the copyright has expired.

My suggestion would be to find a local community college or something. Kinkos might not be the greatest idea .

As suggested, print off the pages you need as you use them or if you are fortunate enough,get an old laptop (or pc if you have space) for the garage.
Paper copies are still best as you can get them dirty then toss 'em. Pcs won't work too well with crud on 'em
and computers are pricey to toss...even old ones.
You might find you will have a problem getting things copied at a big outfit like staples or Kinkos as they don't like to make copies from published documents. Our local staples won't even copy from the newspaper but they will let you do it yourself.

It's only illegal if you try to sell copies on e-bay or anywhere else, which is why some of his manuals show in black print " COPY NOT FOR RE-SALE. "

Personally, I prefer putting the laptop inside a clear dry cleaning bag when I have to use it in the garage. Just leave a hole around the fan on the bottom

At that cost you might as well buy it and have a good, bound copy with no lien on your conscience. If they're out of print, I have much less problem with downloading it. OTOH, If anyone cared about the copyright, I'd think that the sites that host them would have been sued by now. On yet another hand, how long does the copyright on such a thing last?
Copyrights used to be around 20 years. Thanks to Disney copyright is now 90 years. Look for it to be extended again before 2013 when the copyright for the mouse runs out.

Some companies, like Harmon's JBL. don't enforce copyright for old technical publications. They are nice enough not to care about making a dollar off everything. Who knows if Suzuki feels the same way.
