I posted recently concerning dyna s. I want to convert to electronic ignition. It was suggested to call z1 enterprises and talk to them, which I will probably do tomorrow. Getting to the point(s), I was talking with a guy at a local kawasaki place, I was getting an oil filter for my 79 gs 1000.
The subject of the coils was brought up, (this guy was one of their mechanics) With dyna s I need to change out my 5 ohm coils with 3 ohm coils. The whole thing from z1 costs 384 dollars not including plug wires.

His claim was that the suzuki coils are wired in series, and said that he had success with wiring them in parrallell which would effectively reduce my coils to 2.5 ohms, He also stated that with electronic ingnition all 4 plugs fire at the same time, I was wondering if anybody has ever heard of this?

I know they fire two at a time, but if all four were to fire, two would be timed as they are now, but you would be firing a third one at the bottom of the intake stroke and the fourth one at the bottom of the power stroke.

That fourth one would not be much of a problem, but I would be concerned about lighting a fire, then trying to compress it, then lighting it again at the top of the stroke.

He is right about one thing, though. If you change resistors from series to parallel, the effective resistance changes.
But... (seems there's always a big but(t) in there somewhere). If you have 5-ohm coils and they are wired in series, the system is seeing 10 ohms. It might be OK since you are changing the ignitor box to a Dyna, but the stock one would not handle the change, I'm sure. I don't have my manual in front of me, but I seem to remember that my 850 coils were wired separately when I was troubleshooting them last year. By separately, I mean that there was a hot wire on one side, and a signal wire on the other side of each coil. There was no connection between the two coils except that they shared a hot wire connection. If they are 5-ohm coils, I did not see anything in the way they were connected that would make it either 10 or 2.5 ohms.

I am certainly no expert on the electricals of these bikes, however I installed a Dyna S on my '83 GS1100GL and it did not require any modifiction of the coils. I doubt you need to do anything but install the Dyna S as per the instructions and get the timing adjusted correctly.

The install was very easy on my bike.

Ask squaredancerlynn. He has a technic of lowering the coils to 3 ohms without switching out the coils. I think he adds a resister or two.

If his technique involves putting a resistor in parallel with the coil...yes, it will reduce the effective resistance to about 3 ohms, but (there's that word again) only some of the current will go through the coil, the rest will go through the resistor. I would think (I know that's dangerous) that you would want all of the current to go through the (proper) coil.

I have never done this, so I am just applying basic electronic theory as I know it. 8-[

I have a basic knowledge of electronics. I thought I saw a post by Lynn concerning this situation.:-D

That mechanic is full of shi!. You can use the Dyna S ignition on your 79 gs 1000 with the stock 5 ohm coils. Either the 3 ohm replacement or the stock 5 ohm coils will work perfectly fine. Been there, done that MANY times.
Since there are two crankshaft triggers spaced 180 degrees apart, its not possible for all 4 cylinders to fire at exactly the same time (at once).
The cylinders fire (jn pairs (1,4) and (2,3).

Just buy the Dyna S ignition and use your stock coils. Look at your points. If you have point sets that have two hold down screws, they are Kokusan, if the points only have a single hold down screw the are ND Nippondenso.
The difference this makes to the Dyna S set you get is the rotors are different. Just tell the guy at Z1 which type you have.

When you get your Dyna S, in the literature with it, it will say the coil range for the Dyna is 3 to 5 ohms.

As others said before, it's no problem to run coils in the 3-5ohm range.

The $384 unit is the Dyna 2000 - a much more sophisticated ignition setup - usually only installed on 'hot' street bikes and race bikes.

As Earl pointed out the ND versu KD ignition is the biggest area of contention. If you look at our web site and the Dyna-S for the GS's, at the bottom of each page is pictures of the different style points - this may help you ID the verson of the ignition currently in your bike.

Chef,

I saw a post from Sqdancerlynn recently too, but in that one he was adding a 2 ohm resistor in series with a 3 ohm coil so the stock ignitor would see the 5 ohm load it expected. That arrangement makes sense. Trying to reduce a 5 ohm coil to 2.5 or 3 ohms does not.

The stock load for the stock ignitor is 3 ohms. For points systems, the load is 5 ohms.

from z1, dyna s is $120, dyna coils are $120, wires are about $16. I was looking to buy these for my bike this month.

At this point, I'm getting a bit confused as to what he actually had and intended. All I was saying is the stock GS electronic ignition is factory matched with 3 ohm coils and the stock points ignition is factory matched with 5 ohM coils. The Dyna S literature specifies 3 ohm coils but includes that the Dyna S will work correctly with normal longevity with either 3 or 5 ohm coils.

E.

In other words he was putting 3 ohm coils into a points ignition?
Just curious.

I was reffering to Lynn. Sorry for the confusion.

Thanx

Thanx

Sounds good to me. I looked into z1 and noticed that the 384 was for the 2000, and I don't need that fancy stuff, just more to mess up on. Also after posting I had the same thought about firing on the intake stroke. I am going to order the dyna s sans the coils. I replaced the points last year and if I recall correctly I have the ND's but will check before I order. Again thanx for the help.
