A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

GS1000 - Engine ID help

dardoonk

Forum Mentor
I've got two 8v 1000 motors and need to find out what year they are.
Both Chain drive & I have no idea what bike they came out.

GS1000-110015
GS1000-105124

Z1 website lists each year 1000 differently and I am unclear on what small variation the motors might have had from year to year.

When it comes to ordering engine rebuild kits and new seals, how much did the kits vary by year? Would both my engines take the same seals?

Not positive Kurt, but the 850s changed a couple times. in 80 the head changed. a year or so later, the cam timing changed. In 79-81 the block seemed to be based on the 750 or 1000 motor, but in 82, the block looks to be its own, or based off the 1100G block (or vice verse) But other than the head change for the 1000 in 80, i dunno whatelse besides cam timing they may have changed.

Mainly, I am concerned with gaskets & seals. Best case scenario is that I have two identical motors. As long as I figure out what WON"T fit, I'll be okay

from what i have seen, they are either 78 or 79's

the good news is all the seals are the same for both years...

i ordered the gasket kit from ebay, it was like $70 or so, but it had all the correct gaskets i need, and it worked out ok for me....

According to a chart I have the serial number range for 1978 was 100001 to 121073 with 1979 starting at 121074. That would make yours both 1978. Shouldn't matter though as '78 and '79 as mentioned should be identical.
