    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Looks like you only need ONE shim. :encouragement:

Get a 2.45, put it in I4.
Move the 2.50 that is in I4 to I1.
Move the 2.55 that is in I1 to E1.

For sealer, I use Permatex Ultra Black RTV, it can be found in most auto parts stores, K Mart, Wal-Mart and the like.

Good news, that means I filled out the spreadsheet correctly. :)

Such a sense of relief knowing I can do this now. Can't thank the folks here enough!

My old half moons are stuck in there good with some sealer. How should I attack getting them out? I obviously don't want to mar any surfaces. Grab them with a needle nose? Pry them out?

Wow wish mine had been that clean! Bout 7hrs total time cleaning off the old gasket! And congrats on getting it done, I just did mine for the first time a couple weeks ago and was nervous as well. Pretty simple once its done
 
Nice video! I love saying I told ya so, so, I told ya so. Now that you got it you look like a pro :D
 
Nice job on the video. Would be nice to do a phase II of the video showing the removal and replacement of the shims but what you have is a good start.

On a side note, it looks to me like you have an 83 model and not an 82. Black engine along with what looks like the 4 wire signal generator are clues to me. Cold be a late production 82.
 
Nice! I tried my darnest to do a video of mine as well but my phone (camera) died midway through the procedure. :(
 
Thanks for checking out the video everyone. I plan to do a phase two when I get my 2.45 shim in the mail and begin moving shims around.

JTGS850GL, I think the engine is a 1983. I think Steve pointed out the black engine too. (Although it looks like crap and needs to be blasted and repainted).
 
I took a bunch of videos, half were crap and the other half I strung together for this. :)
 
Well, I failed at making a video of me using the shim tool. :( However I did take a couple photos, hopefully ones that show where the tool sits once it's in position.

Also a pic of my valve cover cleaned up, and everything buttoned up with new bolts.

Looks good! I have the allen head valve cover bolts on my 850 as well. I'll probably swap them for standard stainless-steel hex-head bolts eventually because I discovered I can't get a torque wrench on them. Not enough vertical clearance. Or maybe I don't have the right kind of allen sockets, I dunno.
 
Replying to this because I am close to tearing mine down for rings, valve lap, and shims. (Need to get that pesky paint off first, it's pretty rough)

"Replying" is one thing, but did you have a specific question? :-k

At the very least, record your clearances BEFORE you take the engine apart. When you get the cams out, it will be easier to pull the shims and record their sizes. Then you will have a better idea of your starting point when you are ready to put things back together.

I am stripping what paint I can from the block before I even take a single bolt out so I have one less potential for contamination. I do plan on taking measurements before disassembly, but since I will be lapping the valves it will be more for the learning experience.

I also love having this vast amount of resources and knowledgeable people such as you at my fingertips! So far I have built enough confidence about doing the valves, but the rings are my next study project. Luckily I know a guy with a bead blaster (for the head paint) and ring file, so I really shouldn't worry lol.

I will post on here the second my blood pressure rises ;) I am a big fan of spread sheets too, I have studied it and will take full advantage of it's existence :)
