    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Yeah hmm I sent a line out to Ray a while back to see if he had a 2.55, haven't heard. I'll probably just pick up a handful of sizes at Z1 before spring.
 
Two questions, do these valves ever get to the point of no more necessary adjusting?
If so, what mileage might that be?

No, never. The clearance reduces with mileage as the valve sinks into the head.

Yes, but there is still wear.

A well taken care of big GS bike will run 100k miles or more. Problem is, many don't take care of things like valve adjustment and when the valves sink, the clearance goes to zero, and when that happens the valves hang open and burn. Valve seats can overheat and crack too.

The last time I reconditioned the head of the S I had the seats recut back to the original angles also had the engineering shop 'top' the valve stems of 4 new valves to bring the shim gaps back to the thicker shim end.

Yes, that's the standard process.

Big Jay from APE said that when the KZ1000 police heads come in for service they tip the valves to bring them back to OEM height. Sometimes, he said, that results in the valve keepers sticking up above the end of the valve, and when that occurs, they trim back the keepers too. Good fun.
 
Hi. I have 6 or 7 shims in the 2.7 to 2.9 range that I likely will never use. Happy to donate them
 
Anyone have a true 2.6mm shim they want to exchange for cash or other size shims? I have several at 2.64, 2.7, and up.

They definitely seem to slow down with regular use. You can easy get 20k miles + between top and bottom in my experience...
 
20k??????? That sounds awful high for something that is suggested to be checked every 3-4k I believe it is.
 
You're right of course but they don't put everything on top tolerance at the factory there will be one or two that are closer to minimum tolerance for sure..... In the early days (new engine) they also seem to move a bit quicker apparently.

You can easy get 12k between standard shim sizes in my experience.

If you go to Ray's profile page, you will see that he last signed in to the board a couple of weeks ago. He also has an e-mail address listed, might check that.

If worse comes to worse, you can buy the shims you need (except for the "X" shims) at Z1 Enterprises. Shop carefully, make sure they are 29.5mm shims.

Send me a copy (via e-mail) of your spreadsheet page so I can verify that you will be getting the correct shims.

I also have tried contacting Ray, to no avail. On his profile page I don't see a email address. I sent him a PM over a month ago and also this morning.
I'll wait a few days more I guess to see if I get an answer.
