1978 GS1000 Complete Engine Overhaul With Mods

Well guys I know it took forever but I finally updated the web site.
My latest pics are up there as well as updates to the friends bikes
section.

If you want, check it out by clicking on my "WWW" button below.
I may still do up a video feed. Not sure, running out of room on
the web server. But I did a little walk through at the shop.

You did a great job on your website Mark! :D
Thanks for placing my bike on your site. That's quite a compliment! :D

Your welcome Keith :) I just edited the hyperlink at the bottom of your picture so it is a little easier to know to click on it. It points back to your web site then to get the rest of the pictures of it.

I want my bike to come out half that good
and I'll be happy. I am working on a REALLY
low budgett

Carbs! I got a set of 34mm carbs! They will be rebuilt and rejetted to work with my setup. Sweet! :) I don't have more info on them, my mechanic found them for me and said they will work awesome for the work he is doing on the engine.

If anyone is interested I resampled my walk through video clip from 12-13-03 at Paparo Performance and put it up on my web page under the Bike Projects section. I tried hard to balance it between size and quality so it should be easy to download and still very watchable.

I am getting the itch real bad :) I want to get onto the bore and get this thing put back together. The cosmetics may suffer until spring. I am running out of money for sure with Christmas, wifes birthday and an anniversary all in the next two weeks! :-({|=

Hey Hoomgar nice web site, yours so much kicks ass over mine. I'll try not to hold that Kawasaki against you  . Of course I am digging that 650 Turbo, those where pretty quick back in the day. I remember racing one on my 78 GS1000. Werent those a variation on the Seca? I'm trying to find pics of my old bikes, think I'll post em on my site....Merry X-Mas

Yes it was the Seca Turbo and as far as I am concerned it was more of a Seca bike than some of the non-faring types they released. I have been told my web site only looks right when viewed at 1024x768. I am looking into this. I am going to have to redesign the whole thing to fix it. When you get your pictures up let me know, I want to check it out :) Also feel free to send me any pics of your bikes that you would like me to post on my "Friends Bikes" picture section. :)

Thanks for the compliments.

As mentioned in some other topic threads recently I am scrubing the rebuild of the stock top end. My mechanic has a 1980 GS1000L top end for me with some interesting differances from the stock one on my bike. This one has way larger intakes on it. He has the whole bike so I got the carbs and carb boots off it as well. He will rebuild/jet the carbs for me to match the bike and they are 34mm cv carbs which he says should do better for me with the highway riding I do at times. Plus they should do better than the stock 26mm's did at feeding the engine once we up the displacement.

Another interesting thing about this head and block combo is that the front of it has a bolt in the center to help prevent leaking which my old one doesn't have. But it never leaked either. I am going to get some pictures for you guys who are interested in following this topic. I need to get a camera. I have to keep borrowing one everytime I want pictures.

The intakes between the two are very differant in size. So much so that you could not even bore out the stock one to be as big as this other one is because there wouldn't be enough metel there to do it with.

The bottom end is going back together today, new clutch and clutch basket, the crank as you know if you have been following is done and everything else looks really clean.

The rest of the bike I have been working on at home and have made progress. I promiss pictures are forth coming.

Life has been busy and money has been short. I wanted to be farther along by now but it is still moving, just slower than I wanted.

As promissed guys I got new pictures and an update. The project took a small turn. We are now using a cylinder and head that will give better flow. They are off of a 1980 GS1000GL and have way larger intake ports. We will also use the 34mm constant velocity carbs off this bike too. The head and cylinder combo also has an extra bolt in the front of the cam chain area to help seal it against leaking. I think it is unique because my old ones didn't have this.

The bottom end is back together and there are pictures of everything I just mentioned. There are also pictures of Brian (my son) sitting on the dirt bike I bought him that Joe is rebuilding. He is very excited to get it running and ride it as his expression shows. Check the update from 01-20-04 http://home.ptd.net/~megabyte/projects.html

I also updated my friends bikes section. If anyone would like me to add their bikes to it please email me your pictures and I will put them up :)

I have a lot of new cosmetics to add as well but I will post them when I start to put it back together.

Rock on! :)

My project hasn't died guys, it just slowed way down as I ran out of monies. It looks like summer until this is done unless some last minute miracles happen.

The progress at this stage is I am supposed to be picking up my rims trued and re-tired this week. Then my bike will be a roller again :) At that point I can and will reasemble the rest of it and wait for the engine.

I have to check later today if the rims are ready yet or not. They were to be done late last week but the bone heads shipped the wrong tire for the front.

The later heads did have a slightly different bolt pattern, as well as the CV carbs and different intakes.

For sure, larger intakes. That's why were using them :)

Well I called Joe tonight and let it rign and ring. He must have closed early so I still don't know if I am going to have rims this weekend or not yet.

:(

At least with the wheels back on you can have the wife push you around the yard while you make funny vroom-vroom noises. :)

How did you know? I had that planned. Shall I make a video of it?

:)

Sounds good! And put some music in the background, like Benny Hill or maybe Born to be Wild.

Well I don't have a camera right now to make the video (sorry Keith) but I do have a roller again! I got both wheels back and cleaned them up (cleaning tip in the tips and tricks section) and put them on. I don't have a camera right now to take pictures but I will later I promise :)

I didn't do anymore work on the GS then because I spent the rest of my time getting my spare bike ready so I could ride it this weekend. Which I have done :)

I'll post progress pics here just as soon as I get them.

I think I have varmints saaz. That thing has new buds every morning and when I come home from work it is picked clean!

Here they are as promised guys/gals. I updated my web site too so you can just click the "WWW" button at the bottom of my posts and check it out there if you like?

I got the rims back and have cleaned them up and mounted them on the bike. I took pictures of it tonight before diner and now I am excited to get going on this. I want my baby back so bad :(

Here it is in the driveway...two shots...keep scrolling down for more:

The Weisco<--spelling? big bore kit is in and the block is getting bored as we speak.

The head still needs the porting and polishing finished.
