    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I've never tried to run a GS without a airbox(I hate pods)but everthing I've read here says that they need something on the carbs to make them run.

Yeah, you're probably right. I had to go with pods just because I cannot find an airbox for my bike that's cheap and the carbs are already jetted for pods and a 4-1 exhaust.

I'm not going to try to start it anymore until I get some filters!
 
If it's hitting 11.0 when cranking then I think you may still have a bad battery. I'm saying that because I watched mine go from 12.5 sitting with the key on to 11.9 cranking and it turned over but I wondered about it.

I forgot but did you buy that part new? If not, I'd get a good one that will fit and see what happens

Lookin good FC. I think it's safe to say that most everyone following this thread will be as excited as you are to see/hear it running.

But don't be too disapointed when that cover leaks... it can be difficult to get them to seal properly even when all bolts are in place...
 
good job on the swingarm, looks like you rescued it from a cruel p.o. by the looks of the color scheme.
btw, future reference,, when I removed the engine on my 1100, and other past bikes, I just lay i down on something padded and blocked, and lift the frame off the eng. The manual also says to remove the oil breather cover on the very top of the eng to get extra clearnace. I didnt read that til i removed and re-installed, keep up the good work!
 
You can see that some bolts are missing from the stator cover and sprocket cover. That's either because of a broken bolt inside the bolt hole or pieces of the engine broke off. So far, there are no leaks which is a relief.

I sprayed the gaskets with WD40 (not too much) so that I could remove the cover without damaging the gasket. Little trick I learned at school ;).

I should have some air filters on the way and I should have it at least by Friday. I am excited to hear this thing run! :D

Was this motor sitting outside uncovered or somethin??? That oil looks like it has ALOT of water mixed in. Oil that is milky brown like that usually is water soaked. I know cuz of a friend's old 8n tractor that was stored at our house when I was in Highschool. Had a bad boot on the gear shifter. This pic along with the broken bolt bosses that you showed under the sprocket cover, I would be VERY leary about this motor!

Okay dumb newbie question time!! I have seen NOS thrown around here alot. I know what NOS means in high performance cars. Nitrous Oxide. What is the meaning here please??:o
 
NOS in this case means New Old Stock. It is brand new and unopened but was made like 30 years ago.

I have seen people say that you can use a quick fix of taking a shop towel ( I would imagine taking a scrap of an old tshirt would work too) and doubling it up and zip tying or rubber banding over the throat of the intake on the carb can act as a good enough restriction to get a bike to fire. May not run as good as with the filters in place, but could hear it run at least :) Per my other post too, I would recommend changing your oil out after maybe 500 miles or so. WAY less than 4K with as bad as that oil looked you took out. There is undoubtedly still some of that oil in the motor and clutch (these have the same wet clutch system as my 700EF right?) sumps and on the parts that will wash off after you run it for a bit. Just a thought....

Did you give it a maintainence charge before installing? Even a dry charge should be charged before using. You CAN use it (I have with lots of batteries I have purchased) but really should be charged with an external battery charger before putting into service. If you have something that will fire up quick shouldn't be a big problem, but if you have to crank on it for a bit, may not be so good. I forget, did you check voltage at the coils yet with key on?
 
12v at coils. I cleaned some electrical connectors with contact cleaner and now I have a huge blue spark on all 4! I will wait for the filters to get here to try and start it...

And good call on changing the oil again.

Meanwhile, the attached picture is a quick little comparison between stator covers. Much better, huh?

Mucho bettero!! Wow....that looks like something a Polak like me would cobble up till next paycheck! lol
 
Tried the t-shirt idea....

The bike ran! Only for like 3 seconds but it started up! The sound of it is to die for..... I guess that was it, huh? It needed some restriction from the carbs to run.

My filters should be here this Thursday. Maybe Friday. ****..... Too long.

I'm going to go change my pants now.
 
Maybe I missed it, but did you decide to keep it red??? Would be a shame cuz that blue is NICE!! But red is my least favorite and blue my fav so probably a bit of a bias there :D

I'm keeping it red for now. I got the right side cover and front fender painted and that's where I stopped. Too much work right now :rolleyes:. But I wish I didn't paint them yet. I left the front fender off because it looked wrong with red.

Anyways, I managed to get a few things done today. Got a tranny in the deuce and this starter motor cover got here.
