so im chasing wiring gremlins again...
a few years back, my headlight was going out, so i ran couple ground wires directly from the battery to the R/R and the starter solenoid, solved the problem for a while. now im back with the same problem plus my battery is getting overcharged 20+volt at 4k rpm and it killed a brand new battery within 4 -5 months and now it will not hold charge.
Ive tested my stator, it tested 1.1 1.2 1.3 on resistance, 60v at 4k rpm and up with rpm increase, no resistance to ground. basically it passed.
Is all of this pointing to a failed R/R? How do i test it? Also is there a DIY for a new one?
btw, it looks like im still running the original stator
thanks guys :-)

You should not run that bike if it is charging to 20V, you will blow anything sensitive to voltage.

The stator pages have a test for the R/R but it certainly sounds like the regulator portion of the R/R is not functioning.

You will need a new battery and a new R/R. The Honda units are cheap and very reliable.

.....battery is getting overcharged 20+volt at 4k rpm .....

Stock type R/R?
Or one with a scense wire? If scence wire disconnected it will make the R/R put out way too much.
You didnt mention about R/R so I would think is still a stock type.

Yep sounds like Regulator Rectifyer is being a rectifyer but not a regulator, and yah, at 20 volts you will be blowing out bulbs and ruining the battery. And you will want to fix it before it ruins something else like the ignitor.

LOL, ordered the one Ive posted, should be here before the weekend :-)
now new tires, intake boots and some cleaning/detailing and she will be ready for the season

just came to realization that my 78 has a regulator and a separate rectifier:eek: now im confused, what do i need to do to wire this thing?
p.s. nevermind, got it figured out:)

but now another question, considering my bike only has inline fuse, is there a point to wiring in a fuse box? and how would i do this?

The Honda RR should fit perfectly on one of the old mounting locations, and as you determined you are getting rid of two devices for one. IF you don't have an inline fuse from the RR to the battery you can pick one up from Radio Shack cheap and put a 15 amp fuse inside.

i got an inline fuse, so no worries there, i was just wondering if there is a point in installing a fuse to wire in more fuses?
also, im doing something to the harnes, which i will post after im done ;)

I can vouch for the Honda Elite reg/rec from ebay. I ordered it on Monday and received it today. Wired it in and it functions perfectly.

My 450 only had one fuse, had a short problem, turned out to be short in brake light. But since only had one fuse, bike would of course die,
bought a used wiring harness off a 550 (mine finally melted before I fiqured out problem), install new blade type fuse box and now have 4 separate fuses. Now if lights or other problem occurs only blows that fuse and bike can still run and my wife can make it home. Well worth the small expense of used harness and few hrs. cleaning it up and wiring in new box. terrylee

just wanted to verify that this is correct so far? (sorry, im color blind, so wiring is not my strong point)

well, its alive and charging, ended up wiring in another fuse and converting the existing buss fuse in to a blade fuse, time to make a bracket to mount the fuse box properly and get a new headlight bulb
