May I suggest a ZRX?

I leaning towards something more like this. A little time and money to update wheels and suspension and it would be a blast.

No doubt about that. 2-cycle power, light weight - very flickable!

i can remember a guy with an rd200 with tz250 gear on it
might be worth looking for.

Ok, I'm back at it again. I had to take some time off to rebuild a KTM250 for my son. I took a break after that and in the last few weeks I've been observing some pretty nice builds on the forum. It's time to finish this project.

I picked up a GS1150 oil cooler off Ebay, along with the lines. I previously installed an 1150 oil filter cover. Needless to say, like everything on this project, it didn't just bolt up. I fabricated some mounts for the cooler - see pic.

They aren't going to be readily seen so I pussed out a bit on the polishing.

Here is a pic of the cooler mounted. The lubrication system is now complete.

There's a lot of little things, and a few big ones left. I'm leaning toward black for the color. I think I'll remove all of the emblems on the tank and side covers for a stealthy look. That's the current thinking anyway.

Welcome back Swanny,

and nice job on the fabin" looks very clean and dare i say....almost factory?

Katman, I taught Pops all he knows.

I was at it again tonight, preping the tank. I've decided to loose the emblems and paint the tank flat black. To fill the area where the emblems mount I'm using lead. This is a first for me, but I didn't want to use putty as the fill would be too thick.

I don't have a body leading kit, so here is the procedure so far.

1) wire brush the area that needs filling.
2) Slather some flux on. This is the same flux used by plumbers to solder pipes.
3) Heat the area with a solder gun. (This takes a little effort but it does work.)
4) Fill the intended areas with lead.
5) File down the lead smooth,
6) Add more lead and file if needed.

After I get it leaded properly I use some putty for the final smoothing.

I'll post some pics of the tank when I get the leading perfected a bit.

No emblems on the tank or sidecovers. The goal is not to give the bike away. There will be some second looks to figure it out - I hope.

I like it.

all my vehicles are debadged. except my kat. look forward to pics

Rock on Steve :D

I don't feel like I am the only one in the "longest rebuilds" section anymore

I also look forward to pics. The ones listed for the garage above are not showing up for me right now. I am just getting red boxes. I'll try later, not sure what to make of that.

I'm not sure of the problem either Hoomie - they work for me.

Anyway, my excuse for taking so long is that I rebuit another bike - we'll I'm gonna stick with it anyway.

BTW, I'm glad I did the other bike. It's a 1995 KTM250 and my son rides it every weekend near Twentnine Palms. It's completely rebuilt - the engine has been split and the crank refurbished, new top end, gaskets, seals, etc,; the frame was powder coated; forks rebuit with new oil and dust seal; rear shock rebuilt; new bearings and seals everywhere. I ever preplaced the plastic.

Matt, paid for most of it, I just did the work. I'm cheap labor! :)

He has so much fun with it that it makes me happy. It's a new '95. 8)

You can't beat that. Every young man needs two wheeled fumes in his life.

Well, I bit the bullet and purchased a banged up Busa tank for the fuel inlet area and cap. When I get it, I'm going to graft that area into the GS tank. I've always love the look of the modern gas caps and now the old GS is going to get one.

I also picked up a set of 954 triples (2002) and will be replacing the GSXR triples. If Katman is correct, I should get another inch in the front (I trust him).

Once the fork assembly and bars are in place I can mount the controls. I'm also very close to ordering paint. It's starting to come together now. I'll post more pics in another week or two. My goal is to have it running when Matt is discharged sometime in May.

WooHoo! Your getting me excited to see it finished :)

That techy gas cap is going to be cool.

very impressive

very impressive

I just read this entire thread and I am very impressed with your project. Both you and Katman have covered all the bases. I am starting to sound like a broken record, but am very much in awe of you finnish work and the overall quality of everything you have done. It is very obviouse from the quality of your work, that this is not your first project. Are you still on schedual for a May test ride? In my experience things always take longer than my estimates so it won't surprise me if you run over. I can not wait till you get a chance to ride it and report back to us. What year front end is that? At some point I would like to see a right side shot taken at 90 degrees with the exhaust in place. Steve

1100 front end and 954 yokes?

1100 front end and 954 yokes?

Hi Swanny. I just reread the first few pages of your thread to make sure i got it right. I don't think you will be able to use the 954 yokes on the 1100 forks. The 1100 forks are beefier! Make sure you mike them before you go through alll the trouble of attempting to change them. The good news is that the 1100 forks end up about the same lenght as 750 forks with the 954 yokes so it is no big deal.Another benefit is that the 93 1100 is a tank by gsxr standards so you may get lucky and not have to change the springs. Steve, I bought the forks off Ebay and they were advertised as 1100 units. I made some measurements before I purchased the 954 triples. The top was 40 mm and the lower was 44 or 45 mm (I forgot which). In Katmans thread he indicated the top of the 954 was 40 mm.

Sooo - I'm not entirely sure what I have here. Just like everything else on this project I need the parts in hand for fitting.

Thanks for the compliment in the earlier post. No, this isn't my first project. I've built quite a few cars and a couple of motorcycles. This is the first motorcycle that I'm changing to this degree however. If I was putting it back together stock it would have been done a long time ago. This has been a challenge, but I enjoy that.

You should see my wifes 1970 Super Beetle. Complete ground up resto with lots of modifications. 1776 motor w dual webers, custom interior, viper red paint w shaved turn signals, lots of mods. She likes it.

954 yokes

954 yokes

Just remember, you must use the top and bottom yoke from the 954 as you can not combine the 954 with the bottom gsxr as the offset is different. Please double check your measurements before you dissasemble anything. The 1100 mounts the clipons above the top yoke and has bolt holes in the top of the yoke to locate them(This is why they are longer.). This is the easiest way to tell them apart at a glance. My dad was a VW nut. He bought his first one in Germany in 1957, the year I was born, and later became a professional VW mechanic at a local dealwership. Eventually he ran his own shop, specializing in VW's until he died in 1967. Steve You seem to put an unusual amount of effort to build personalized vehicles for the folks you care about. You interested in adopting another big kid? :D

Next up is my daughter. She didn't want the VW when she saw what I brought home (pretty rough). My wife loves VW's so she was right on it. Now, after it's finished my daughter is begging me to build her a car. She wants a Karmen Ghia - lol.

I need to get out of this apartment before I start on anything like that. We had a home lined up in the mountains but the plumbing broke and the deal fell through. Woe is me.

Karman Ghia

Karman Ghia

Think I sent you a private mesage by mistake. My mom had a Karman Ghia convertible. One of those with the Swammy treatment would be way cool. i'll take mine in yellow. :D
