Ok, so I have finally started working on rebuilding my 750. It's going to be slow but I just wanted to start a thread so I can document it, and get advice from folks that know more than I do about these bikes. I'm probably going to have to tear down and rebuild everything on her. Here are some before pics from when I got here a couple of years ago.

Almost a roller

Almost a roller

This is where I am at so far. I have replaced the original frame with a titled frame. I bought the bike for$100 but it had nothing in the form of paperwork. Got a new titled frame for another $100. I have reassembled the front end but I need to replace seals and fluids in the forks and stem and wheel bearings. Also need a new speedo drive since mine is frozen. I am waiting on new oem parts for the swing arm and then I'll assemble that with the rear wheel once I get it

Ignore the gas tank, it's only there for reference.

I'm interested in your rebuild but the pics aren't showing.

I can see em' Now!

Dang, my second "T" doesn't have as much rust...good job on acquiring the second frame because that's a complete teardown bike!

Here's a couple pics of mine:

The frame it came with was crap. It is rusting through everywhere. The cases need some work, but I think with some wire brushes and fine steel wool I can get them looking good. The carbs were rusted solid so I'm on the lookout for another set as well. I am hoping I can keep the cost under a grand getting this thing back to life.

So I got a few more parts in and started mocking up the rear end. For right now I have an old set of shocks until I can afford better aftermarket ones. I would really love to put some progressive shocks on once it is ready for the street, but will probably end up with the Emgo ones. Still waiting on dust caps for the swing arm but have it in place.

The rear wheel is still fighting me. I have yet to pull the bearings. The brake hub is a real piece of work! The shoes are wedged up against the hub, swollen from years of moisture?, and are making it all but impossible to remove the brake hub from the drum. I am making very slow progress on it. I'm confident it will be off before the weekend is out. I do not want to damage anything so I am being overly cautious.

I have been reading other rebuild threads and devouring all the tech info I can in the mean time. I will post more pics as soon as it is light out enough for pics.

The first two show the rear sprocket that won't release from the hub. Probably need some heat on that one. The last two are the rear wheel, and how far I have managed to get the brake plate off of the drum.

Dang,

You've got your work cut out! Some advice I've been given is to spray either Liquid Wrench or WD40 on parts that "won't come apart" and let them sit for a while...even overnight...and continue to loosen the mated parts.

Or you can try heat...but I'd rather try the "break free" fluids first.

Thanks for the update.

I've been trying penetrating spray, and liquid wrench. I can't find my wd40 right now, but I need to get a big can of it.

Well I didn't get much done today on the 750. A pipe broke in the kitchen so that brought everything to a halt for a few hours. Thankfully I at least know what is broken, so I won't have any more water leaking until it is fixed. Down side is no laundry or dishwasher until it is fixed, hopefully Monday.

I managed to get the brake pedal removed from the old frame. It was on there good. It took a lot of penetrating oil, a 1x2, and a no blow mallet. The spindle will not budge so I got one coming off eBay at a good price. I also got another spedo drive, and brake spindle from eBay too.

I tore down the front caliper and think I might need a new one of those. I have the piston soaking in penetrating oil and hope that the caliper is salvageable. The piston is totally seazed up. I removed the boot and was not surprised to see it totally encrusted with crap. I used a pic to get as much out as I could. I will put the pliers to it in the morning and see if I can get it free.

The front brake m/c might be salvageable as well. Im going to have to probably take the screw extractors to the m/c lid. I put light pressure on my screwdriver and the screw heads both started to strip. I stopped as soon as I felt metal giving way. Those will get replaced with stainless allen heads if it can be rebuilt. It all depends on the sight glass. Can it be replaced?

I'll try and take some pics in the morning.

It CAN be replaced, there is a thread on it here somewhere.
I read through it a long time ago, but right now I have no idea where it is.
I would suggest utilization of the search feature.

Nice to see you putting this much work into bringing a T back to life!

I kind of figured it could, but I got lazy after the sun went down and just wanted to throw the last post up before going to bed. I'll search for it. I've been doing a lot of that lately so as to not ask a bunch of redundant questions. Plus I keep BikeCliff's page open in another tab for quick reference.

It will be good to have another T on the road again. That however has to be the nastiest one I've seen yet. I am looking forward to your progress on her. Keep up the good work.

The pics of when I brought it home don't do the nastiness justice! I probably should have passed on it, but I wanted something to fix up and learn on. I have another bike that runs and isn't an antique rust bucket so I'm not really in a hurry. Plus the wife doesn't give me grief because I told her she can have it when I'm done with it if she can handle it. But after all the work this is going to take I think I'll get her something smaller and newer and keep the GS.
