All new forum registrations must be activated via email before you have full access to the forum.

A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Can you comment on how they feel different? Not sure that the 1229 I will build this year would need one, but ...

On a street motor with ANY kind of hp, 140 or more, I feel a lock up is as much a requirement as a welded clutch hub & crank. Just makes life so much easier on your left hand & you can get AGGRESSIVE launching the thing!!! An RBD cover looks good on a street bike too!
Ray.

I can see why :)

Looks like I'll be buying a lockup clutch along with a modified basket, then.

the RBD cover is awesome but it cost as much as the lock up does:eek:
i have a lockup spacer that i had an external clutch cable mount made for.
this is so you can run your clutch cable outside of the bike away from heat and bends....super smooth cable action...does the same thing as the RBD cable kit...plus i have 2 RBD cable kits listed.
it's in my stuff for sale just in case:D

Why not just buy a bike made for speed? Most any modern 600cc sport bike will do what you want and then some without the hassle or worries of trying to make an old bike fast. Plus it'll stop and handle better than most any classic GS.
This attitude seems to be surprising popular here and that's something what I don't get. This forum is called "The GS Resources" and this is "Performance/Tuning/Mods" section after all.

Sorry for rant...

It is really not worth discussing in any specifics, unless someone wants to voice what they really like about their bike. I can only imagine that these questions come out because the person asking the question really doesn't know what they want. Most people building an older GS certainly seem to know what they want.

Looking at your bike, it is clear you could have probably done the same or similar to almost any kind of bike, but clearly you did not because it is obviously not what you wanted.

Yes, I am a total novice, and my advice should be taken as such. Most of my advice comes not from experience, but from parroting what I've learned.

These guys know way more than me, but I still think you should just go for it. Bolt on some parts and see what happens. Just be sure to report back here with the results.

And yes, I probably will break my motor doing stupid things. PAR for me.

I take that back. I have a lot of experience blowing up race motors. Not specifically GS race bikes, but anything really. I've learned a lot putting them back together.

Oh, and I want the OP to throw in a cam and hammer it so I can see what happens. That way I won't have to risk my motor if it blows up. That's my hidden agenda.

=)
