A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Cleaned Carbs - Same Problem

After making sure I had spark at the plug and good compression in the cylinder, I pulled apart the carbs on my 1983 GS1100E to see if they were the reason I was running on 3 cylinders at idle. Here's what I found:

Not bad, right? Nothing gunked up, no o-rings damaged, and only one semi-clogged hole in one of the main jets (not the one giving me problems). I carefully inspected as I went and let everything soak overnight before blowing it out and re-installing the next day. Started it up and exactly the same problem: Runs on 3 cylinders at idle, then springs to life with a little throttle.

Airbox is tight and all boots are nice and soft and tight.

Any ideas?

Here's my pic since I know you all like pictures and the thread link in my signature seems to have been deleted.

Which carb is not working at idle /low speed- isn't it likely that the low speed passages are blocked, since it "springs to life" once you introduce the main jet to the party.

No, when you bring the needle jet to the party. A problem with idle only is your pilot jet or it's circuit.

You have it that far apart, dip them and do the whole job correctly.

I 'had' them that far apart. Everything's put together again. It's cylinder #4.

OK, it's not the choke circuit at fault... try this, put some Techron in the gas and ride it a while, it could clean out and start to run right.
Slight chance, anyway.

Happy to try anything. Thanks for the suggestion. Next step is taking them apart again and doing the dip (even though they were pretty pristine).

It's either a blocked pilot jet (or part of that circuit) or your mixture screw is way out of whack.

Carb rebuild tutorial is linked in my signature. It's worth a read though to make sure you didn't miss anything...

It could also be the carbs are WAY out of synch.
That is where I would put my money, and they don't really have to be all that far out of sync.

In fact, that is the whole purpose of a "sync", it is to synchronize the opening of all the throttle blades.

.

If you didn't set them correctly that's a likely problem, but also if you didn't take them out to clean the carburetors that's another likely problem.

Ya I'll play with that tonight. I noticed the caps were off before I cleaned them so someone's been in there already.
And you didn't turn them in to find out where they were set and then remove them when you[soaked] them over night . Sounds to me like you are cutting corners, what you will need to do is a complete tear down of the carbs, dip and clean them thoroughly, replace the o-rings, do a bench sync, then reinstall, then do the final sync and tuning. Something is dirty in the carbs. If you follow the tutorial they will work fine and your bike will run smoother then you can imagine it just takes time and there are no short cuts. Good luck;)
