DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Count pins on timing chain

While checking the valve shim clearance on my 1983 GS450L the timing chain slipped as few teeth, so now I have to reset it.

I have the clymer manual, which lists 18 pins in between marks 2 and 3 as the correct timing. Unfortunately the images are a little vague. Since the 2 and 3 marking arrows are at the valley of a tooth are you supposed to include the pins in those valleys as part of the 18? Or do you exclude those pins that fall right at the markings?

Put another way, is it 18 pins, including the pins ate the markings or 18 pins between the markings, which would be 20 pins including the ones at the marks

Thanks,

Steve

The diagram suggests the arrow points to the pin...

I have never seen a variation to the above interpretation. Pin 1 is at the exhaust cam arrow. Pin 18 (or 20 for the 850) is at the inlet cam arrow.
This always makes me think and double check because I can't get my head around it.

Thanks all, I'll adjust as needed.

I saw the picture , but the use of the word "between" threw me. Plus the arrows are just barely after and before the pins, at least by my eyes.

"18 chain pins (GS450 models) are between arrow No. 2 on the exhaust cam and arrow No. 3 on the intake cam as shown in Figure 29 or Figure 30."

An unambiguous wording would have added, including the pins at arrows 2 and 3.
