If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

You wouldn`t think a simple thing like an oil change would end up so catastrophic but it seems it has. To make a long story short the oil filter cover. I got it off fine. Installed the new filter and rubber seal. Started to put the 3 acorn nuts back on. They went on easy enough. Started the bike and oil was gushing from the oil filter cover. Started to remove and the first 2 nuts cam off fine. The third 1 just spins. Won`t get tight and won`t come off. Just turns. Can`t tell if the nut is stripped or the stud is FUBAR. Help! It`s finally 70 degrees and I want to ride. Any suggestions?:(:(:(

Get a pair of vice grips and grab the nut....pull away from the engine while you spin it.

Start there.

And once again I bow to the all powerful GS gods. Vise grips and channel locks wouldn`t fit bbut a pair of long needle nose did the trick. I`m off now to the hardware store to see if I can get a couple of new nuts and a new stud just in case. Anyone know how long the studs for the oil filter cap are? I`m going to take a good acorn nut with but if they don`t have an acorn will a nut of the same size with new washers do?

Yeah, normal nuts will do fine, it does not have to be an acorn nut.
maybe pull the studs out and put some good strong locktite on the threads and screw them back into the motor, to avoid a repeat somewhere down the line.
Don't over tighten the nuts, it is not nessasary.

Same thing happened to me the last oil change I did. I was able to replace the stud and the nut with hardware store stuff. It's not the end of the world. If you really cant find what you want try McMaster Carr. They have just about every type of hardware imaginable, and ship everywhere.

Agian. Thanks to everyone. I found the part no. for the stud in my parts manual but it doesn`t have the size. I`ll try checking the fiche online now. Don`t want to run out of daylight.

Hello again all. EUREKA! Suzi and I are on the road again. The local Ace hardware had everything I needed. Got new studs, new washers and nuts. Problem solved. Just wanted to say thanks again for all the assistance. I the advice from the site and changed the oil with Rotella T 15-40 and am on my way out for a quick test ride. Again thanks to all. Rubber side down. Shiney side UP!
Mike

Why does someone believe you when you say there are four billion stars, but check when you say the paint is wet?

have this same issue currently..

is it the acorn on the bottom right? how hard was it to replace the stud?

All three with the same issue

All three with the same issue

I'm really glad I found this thread because I'm dealing with all three acorn nuts being stripped right now! (1979 GS750E) I took all of them out, put in the new oil filter and then as I was tightening them I felt them start to get looser...not a good sign. I didn't know how far to tighten them and when my husband suggested that I must have just settled the cap and that is why they were all turning so well, so I just kept cranking away. Ugh. I'll go back out and try the needle nosed pliers to see if that gets me anywhere. I had been pulling with regular pliers but to no avail yet. At least the days are pretty rainy right now so I'm not too tempted to ride.

as much as youll be removing that bolts for oil changes, you need to be aware that the STEEL from the bolt is gonna be abrasive to the softer aluminum cases. AND if you cross thread that bolt just once your into having to retap the hole and a p[ossible oil leak situation. I would restud it and go with a flat washer and nut.
