  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Perhaps because there are no filters on the carbs? And the open exhausts. Rejet the carbs!
 
From what I understand, high revving or the hanging idle syndrome is bad intake boot O rings or at least intake related, so what FC says certainly could be the cause of that.

However, blowing bulbs says more charging system to me so I'd be checking it as a matter of priority, otherwise you may find yourself with a fried ignitor and that's where the fun begins with trying to find a replacement...

Aside from that, tank looks good :)

I wasn't sold on your 21 inch front wheel in the original pic, but in the most recent one it seems to fit better, maybe it's the tank/wheel combo or just the angle, not sure...

My guess is that there is junk in the carbs... they've been sitting up for a month or so while I've done all the other work on the bike. It actually ran pretty decent before with no filters and the open exhaust. I'm guessing that the previous owner did rejet the carbs and at least got close... I have another set of carbs I'm going to put on the bike tonight with some pod filters.... and I'll be changing the exhaust up, I was just excited to try and get a ride in since I haven't ridden it in a month...

Pete, I'm actually starting the think that something was stuck in the idle jets causing it to lean out momentarily or even the throttle cable was stuck for a second? Once it cleared it's throat or something it actually idled fine. It just idled way up for long enough to make the headlight turn pretty colors and then die haha. I'm going to check the voltage tonight and make sure my reg/rec is doing its job. I'm hoping that it didn't fry anything else, especially the ignitor box...

As far as the 21... you will soon find the chopper way! haha
 
P.S. I just thought of what my voltage issue is. The reg/rec on this bike is a 6-wire model with the extra wire being a voltage sensing wire. It was previously hooked up to ground and I blindly just hooked it back up to ground when I redid the wiring.... when actually it should be hooked to the ignition or power source. So, the regulator wasn't doing it's job, because it couldn't "see" the voltage. I'll switch that up tonight and it should fix that problem...
 
Cool, if it was only a short term thing then quite possibly, and would be a very easy fix if that's it :)

Also, as to your sense wire, yeah that definitely needs to go to 12v somewhere, well found!
 
Fixed the wiring but even after switching carbs it still has no low end power. Guess I'll be working on carbs tomorrow night! yay haha

I don't think anyone else has said it but that's a cool helmet! I love the 3/4 metalflake lids :). What brand is it? I want one that has a low profile, that sits very low on your head.

We are going to need to hear the exhaust :D.
 
I'm not sure what brand that one is... it's vintage and it's really low profile. It's pretty clean too. I also have two Arthur Fulmers and this is just the first one I found when I was going on the test ride haha.

So far I've only gotten one side of the exhaust done, so you'll have to wait until I get the other side done before you can hear it. I added a washer up where I cut the old massive exhaust pipe off, so that should provide a little back pressure and help out the lower to mid range...
 
Got the other exhaust pipe fab'd up tonight and cleaned the carbs.... fired right up! Rode around the neighborhood and the mid range feels way better, but off idle is still really sluggish and feels powerless.
 
Off idle? See how much throttle opening you have there, but it sounds like you might need to do some needle shimming.

Pete,

I was thinking some needle shim adjustments would probably help too. The carbs I have on it now were "professionally jetted" for stock mufflers and pod filters. They came off the other gs450 that I bought for my wife a few weeks ago.

On another note, the "washers" that I added for baffles did wonders for the mid-range.

That would make sense if it was giving you back pressure you were lacking before. Apparently no back pressure on these things means they run like crap.

I wouldn't be surprised if "professionally jetted" means they just stuck one size up main jet in, which is what I've read is the general recommendation for pods and stock pipes.
 
Well I'm hauling the bike over to birmingham to a friends for the weekend. They are having an event at a local shop with a ride to follow... I'm going to work on tuning the carbs some more this evening to try and get a little better response out of it.
 
Made a few changes... Tried as hard as we could to get her to the round up but a bum igniter module was only firing one coil. Turns out this was the "no power" problem all along... Oh well I will have it up and running in the next few days. Look for updates and more pictures to come later this week.

Something was wrong with the clear I used the other night. It was foggy or something so I wetsanded and re-cleared it this afternoon.

Oh yeah I tested the igniter and signal gen. And the igniter was bad so I robbed the one from my wife's project gs450 and I've got beautiful blue sparks in both cylinders now
 
Usually when the clear coat is foggy, it's because it's too moist or cold outside. The tank looks good! And glad you got that power problem fixed :).

That's good to know... I know next to nothing about paint jobs haha. I like trying to layout stuff though... Gonna let the paint cure overnight and I'll ride it tomorrow after work if it's not raining hopefully.
