Sure hope this doesn't turn into a flame war...just call it done...lessons learned, and be done. :-D

Absolutely. Why wouldn't he agree to this? Especially after you ate shipping both ways. Not cool.

Ray would have to cover the MO or check, stamp, and his time. In his case, if he is doing it to put food on the table, theres a difference. You can only go so far to try and help someone out. Most places have a restock fee to cover this...

I agree, I wasn't after performance improvement. I was after 1150 stock cams and Ray said he had some stock gsxr cams that will work.

He did tell me he had been running them for some time and a drag race buddy of his was running them with no apparent issues so I said ok why not.

Fair enough. I can see how it's all happened...:wink:

No disrespect to the parties involved, but I think it would be beneficial if this thread was deleted. You can search threads that a user has posted and I do not think anyone wants to not look good to someone who is trying to assess who they are getting information from. This discussion should have been addressed to Dear Abbey :)

IMHO, I dont think so. Its good info in a kinda soap opera way. We can all learn from this one. I bought some hard bags that were advertised to fit and I knew going into it there was some risk. They didnt fit & I got hosed on the freight. So I wrote it off, relisted them, and recovered what I could.

Thats what I would recommend for these gents. Relist them, get what you can and move on.

This just came up for me. I sold a set of Triumph shocks to a guy who thought they would work on a Guzzi he's restoring. He paid me $40 bucks for nearly new shocks that I have no use for, but I still told him that if they didn't work he'd get his money back.

I thought that was fair. Here at GSR, we're all basically in the same boat when it comes to finding parts for our bikes. All of us appreciate these bikes, but understand the used parts supply continues to dry up and we will need each other even more. Our reasonable and fair treatment for other members will become more and more important. I believe the right thing to do was refund the money. Someone else may end up wanting them now that they've read this thread anyway.

Good Karma will come back to you [-o<

Now then, let's all have a group hug!

I understand both sides. Both have valid points and I don't see any wrongdoing as there is no indication the cams aren't any good. I think at this point Katman is willing to eat the shipping than Ray isn't out anything and can still make his money out of the cams down the road. I think a comprimise is in order. Refund the cost of the cams and don't do any further business as I think both of you are stand up members of the board.

My 2 cents

...mis-understandings on both sides?...yes, wrong-doing on either side?...no. I think both members made their cases clearly, and without malice; which helps to allow the masses to have a pretty clear picture of what happened. Good on everyone! The GSR is a good place.

Wow.

Personally, I would have just bought the OEM parts and been done with it. Why on earth you would risk putting something into a stock motor that is not stock OEM is beyond me.

You did not do the research. You did not buy OEM, hel l you didn't even buy new?

I originally called Ray on a starter clutch gear. While talking I mentioned the 1150 build. Ray sold me on the gsxr cams saying they were in excellent shape and would bolt in. HE mentioned he could also get G cams so I got him to get me prices on them too. Called the owner of the 1150 and gave him the choices. HE chose the used cams. Sighted the major budget over run on the complete build and he wanted to save money anywhere he could.

I advised him new cams were the way to go but he wanted the used ones. I ended up getting new G cams.

I don't recommend replacing used parts for used parts just so we are clear.

In most cases I'd say it's the one who follows advice, not the adviser who bears responsibility. From a strictly logical standpoint, nobody forced Katman to buy the part or heed the advice.

But in business terms, customer satisfaction doesn't necessarily depend on who's right or wrong. It would be difficult to determine whether Ray's advice was correct (especially since it may have worked, but not as long as required), or Katman was being overly cautious. Of course Katman has a responsibility to his customer to be cautious, but that's not Ray's concern.

All things considered I think Ray accepting the part back, giving a refund, and Katman eating the shipping is fair. However, if Katman's modifications to the part lowered its value or rendered it useless, that's a different story.

The red line on the left is where the cam ends. Runs on half the journal. Apart from the oil concern, thats not much journal to run on. As you can see the cam doesn't cover the oil jet or the groove to force oil between the cam and the journal. NONE of this was mentioned in our conversation before buying. Either was the machining neccessary for clearences which may have brought the cost of the cams close to new ones. At that time I would have to had to send them out. IF this isn't adequate cause for concern or return I don't know what is. My Point.. If I had known I wouldn't have bought. My fault?? OK you can put it on me. I won't disagree. The buck ultimately stops with me.

I conceed it may be working for Ray but I wasn't willing to take the chance. I don't think I was out of line. We will just have to agree to disagree. The part was good for what it is for. I would buy from Ray again. I would just do my homework first if it is a modification application. I don't have any hard feelings either way.

I can see where your coming from, but the customer is not always right. In this case, not so much a concern except you passed along bad info on the cams being a 1:1 and asked the customer to make a choice based on that. This is a problem.

I was thinking of a few cases on this site of guys getting just what they asked for, the APE crank welding comes to mind. I would rather go to a builder who would tell me flat out that I was full of sht and that they would not bid the job. They are the experts and I consider this part of what I am paying them for.

Lets see, I want an ultra reliable bike engine but make it out of 25 year old used parts so I can save some $$$, then warranty your work for 25,000 miles. Seems like your rep as a builder is on the line. The better the rep, the more risk in cutting corners. If the motor blows, next thing you know he is posting on GSR about the a crappy motor you built. To him he was getting some race motor with those G blah blah cams and couldn't understand why when he beat the **** out of it that it let go after the first 2000 miles. Then we all get to jump in the fun again. LOL

This is the third occation I have eaten parts costs from this forum.

I guess That is one reason I posted. I was sent an 1100 crank, paid top dollar for it and it had 1150 rods, 20mm wrist pins. no good to me but according to the seller its buyer beware. I sold it and lost another 100 bucks.

As you live you learn.

right or wrong

right or wrong

I am a new member and i have to agree with Katman on this issue.

I just went through this same thing with 2 items i bought on trust and so called knowledge.I am out $150 on the 2 parts.I was told they would work and would fit.Well let me say they didn`t.This place is alot of help and we are all on here to help where we can.The difference between the GS Pages and a business is we are here to help and have trust.I really don`t see the big deal with asking for the refund and eating the cost.

If Katman would have been told by the seller (in my opinion they will work and so far so good) then if he went and bought them it is all on him. From what i am reading Katman didn`t get all the info b4 hand.He didn`t know he had to machine anything and things like that.Buyer Beware is not for this site. That is for Ebay or Craiglist.Just like the song from Billy Joel (A matter of trust).Opinions are a great thing we all have them.I don`t think this is the place for them when in need of help.We are all looking for the right answers not opinions.

lalock, im sure you have a bike that whips the llamas ass if either of these gents had a hand in building it. I respect both of thier opinions and knowlege, and am quite glad that this was handled fairly civily. Welcome to the GSR! Now, lets see some pics of that keg-o-whoopass on two wheels! \\:D/

Your not thick

Your not thick

I'm sorry but I can't sit back and be silent anymore, I too have been deceived by rapidray. On 9/25/07 I posted for a 85 1150 cylinder, rr replied on 9/30/07, after a few PM's I mailed him a check on 10/5/07 coast to coast for $125.00 for the cylinder. This check was cashed 10/11/07 the day it arrived. Now to make a very long story short after almost two months and many PM's and phone calls with absolutely no reply I finally left him a voice message saying that by his nonresponse I could only assume that I had been ripped and would expose him to others in hopes I would get his attention and he would finally return a call. Indeed this worked, he called and left me a very angry voicemail stating he had never ripped anyone in his life and that he had come home from church the night before I called and found the cylinder returned on his front porch. So I called him back immediately and he would not answer his phone once again. So I left him a voicemail going through the facts stating that I mailed him a check on 10/5 that was immediately cashed and had never received the cylinder and had sent many many PM's and left many many voice-mails on his phone and was totally ignored, and it was now 11/28 almost two months later and what would he expect me to think. Now rr said in his voicemail to me that he had been to church and from this I hoped that he is a man of conscience so I finished my voicemail stating if you are in bad need of money keep the money and the cylinder and Merry Christmas if not, please sent me the cylinder and maybe we could do business in the future. I never heard from Ray again. Now rr states in his reply to you that he is an honest person, I find this hard to beleive being I gave him every chance in my situation to let his conscience be his guide. Katman maybe I should not have replied to this but if it saves someone from going through what I have, it's worth it. I have always been tauhgt that at the end of the day that the only thing that can stand tall is the truth. I will send you a PM with my number to discuss.

Wow!!!!!!!!!!!! Did you save the voice mails? Cashed chek? This is BAD! I can tell you that there is no way I would have let that one go if it happened as you have suggested. I would have filed in small claims after I sent him a 1099. Or was that a donation....

Looking forward to hearing Ray's side on this one!
