Anyone know where I can get my carbs sync'ed in the orange county, CA area? i really dont want to get shafted in the price.

My suggestion would be to purchace a set of carb sync gauges, perhaps from here

www.z1enterprises.com

And do it yourself, as you're going to pay prolly that if not more to have it done. This way, you save some money, not just now, but forever. Just a thought tho...

Don't know any good shops but if you get stuck, I'll do it for you for beer. :)

Carbtune

Carbtune

I would suggest you buy a Carbtune set-up. It will pay for itself after you've use it once or twice and it will last forever if you're careful. It's easy to use, kind of fun and will give you a great deal of satisfaction over and over.:)

I liked my Carbtune so much that I went out and bought another bike I could use it on!\\:D/

You're one sick dude Chucky. :-D Carbtunes do rule though!

Greetings All,

I have been thinking about getting a manometer for doing carbs. Is the one that Z1 offers for $50.00 and the carbtune set up mentioned here the same? If not who offers the carbtune, which one is easier to use and what adapters are needed(Z1 offers 3 sets).

Thanks,

Andy

No, they are not. The gauges for $50 will work, but they are a bit of work. The Motion Pro gauge that is also available at Z1 (for $85) is a much better gauge set.

If not who offers the carbtune, ...
The Carbtune is available from ... well ... Carbtune. The cost is 58 UK Pounds. Depending on current currency exchange, that's about $113.71.

... what adapters are needed(Z1 offers 3 sets).
If you get the Motion Pro gauge from Z1, the adapters are included. If you want the ultimate in ease, the permanent adapters are nice. With them, you only have to remove the rubber cover and slip on the vacuum hose for the gauge. With the 'normal' adapters, you have to thread them in and out on a warm engine, which can, at times, be painful.
If, by chance, adapters are not included, you will need the 5 mm adapters for your bike.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like the extra $$ is well worth the amount. I'll have to pick one up in the near future and will post the results. Thanks again.

Andy

Cartune supply a set of 5mm and 6mm adaptors. The adaptors are easy to install. For the inboard carbs, you just slide a piece of plastic hose about 4'' long over the adaptor end to extend it and avoid burning you fingers. It works well. They can then be lightly tightened by using a long bladed screw driver.
Their storage kit is worth investing in too. It's a neat practical package. I have used my Carbtune on three occasions now.
Incidentally, I recommend Keith's suggested rpm setting of 4000rpm for balancing as opposed to the Clymer 1500-1800rpm. I found quite a difference in vacuum levels when checking one rpm level against the other.
As Keith says, you use the engine in the higher range more often than the lower one so it makes sense to have the balance right in that area.
The only drawback to the higher rpm balance is you produce more heat, so make sure that you have an adequate supply of fanned air available.

Thanks man, im thinkin i just might do that, although I do have a pretty good manual for the bike, is it a somewhat easy job?

Its very easy on the '79 VM carbs, just takes time to set everything up. You'll need to either use an external fuel tank or get extra hose and put your gas tank on your work bench or some other place above the carbs. Make sure that you plug your vacuum line or you'll really get messed up! Get the right wrench and screw driver to make your adjustments with and don't overtighten the lock-nut. Also use the right screwdriver when taking off the covers to get at the adjusters.

Fans are necessary to keep your engine cool while doing the job. I use three, but two is probably enough.

Also, make sure your valves are adjusted correctly, and you don't have vacuum leaks before doing the job.

Mr. Rob Arther,

I spoke to a guy a few months ago who used to be a service manager for a couple of bike dealerships. He loves the old UJMs. He calls himself "The Bike Whisperer" and works in north OC, Fullerton area. He seemed real and asked the right questions when I talked to him about my carbs, but I haven't used him yet. If you'd like to give him a call, his name is Jim, shoot me a PM and I'll give you his phone number.

But I'm thinking I'll give Mr. Nessism, Mr. chef1366, or Mr. rapidray a shout and ride over there sometime when my carbs need it. I can supply the barley pop.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

Soda pop with the foam on top! \\:D/

Helped Salty_Monk do his carbs a couple weeks ago. Recently bought that fancy smancy Motion-pro long reach adjuster tool for CV/BS carbs (works great on the outer adjustment but doesn't reach the center because the frame backbone is in the way). VM carbs are easier to adjust in my experience since each carb is separate.

I'm agreeable to help anyone, with anything, in terms of doing repair work. Just ask, and be willing to learn and help. 8-)
