Many people with low mechanical sympathy never check the valves on their GS. The valve clearance gets smaller with mileage so if you don't adjust the valves eventually all the clearance will be used up as the valve pounds into the seat. When the valve never seats the hot combustion gases will burn the valve face and valve seats.
Good news is that Suzuki used some good materials on these parts and they withstand a lot of abuse.
The valves with the black faces are burned from lack of maintenance. The other set of valves look bright and shinny on the sealing face they way they should. Please be nice to your engine and take care of it properly.
