Photos about valve care for the newbies...

Many people with low mechanical sympathy never check the valves on their GS. The valve clearance gets smaller with mileage so if you don't adjust the valves eventually all the clearance will be used up as the valve pounds into the seat. When the valve never seats the hot combustion gases will burn the valve face and valve seats.

Good news is that Suzuki used some good materials on these parts and they withstand a lot of abuse.

The valves with the black faces are burned from lack of maintenance. The other set of valves look bright and shinny on the sealing face they way they should. Please be nice to your engine and take care of it properly.

These valves came out of an engine with 26,000 miles. These valves are burned and the springs, valve buckets, and spring retainers are blue from the heat. Please adjust your valves or this will happen to your bike.:(

Nice pics Ed.
I'm a novice when it comes to engine components and about everythng else, actually. I do know that valve adjustments are critical to proper engine performance. I get to use tappet adjusters on my 16v engine, instead of shims.

Can the burnt up valves be cleaned and reused or are they trashed ?

Pardon me, but, it's kinda slow here at work today. I was reading the other day about shimming carbs. As I understand it, some carbs come stock with notches for this purpose. On the carbs that don't, washers must be used. Correct ??
This got me thinking about my Mikuni BS32SS carbs on the '81 GS750L that, if needed, would have to use the washer technique.

I was wondering if anyone had pics of how to shim a carb with washers ?:)

Hey Larry,

Shimming BS/CV carb needles is easy, but has nothing to do with burning valves other than there are shims involved.:p

And speaking of valve shims, I believe the 8V GS engine valve train is one of its strong suites. The cams have a wide contact face and wear extremely well. The buckets over the valve eliminate any lateral thrust forces on the valve which extends the life of the valve guides. Regarding adjusting the valves, once you build up a stock of shim discs, adjusting the valves couldn?t be easier. The forked rockers on the 16V engines are far more difficult to adjust in comparison. To each their own I suppose.

Hi Mr. Nessism,

This is good stuff Ed. I know a certain website where this information can be stored for future reference. ;)

This is like a mechanical "Scared Straight". :D

Thank you for your indulgence,

Yeah, I know. I guess I should've asked by starting my own thread. Just though someone may have a pic. The talk of shims got me thinking....very dangerous sometimes, especially when I haven't ridden in a couple days. Stupid cold weather and rain !!! When is it gonna be summer or at least spring ??

So, are the burnt up valves able to be cleaned and reused ?:)

If the valves are not damaged too much the face can be resurfaced by an automotive machine shop. When they get hot enough to burn though, their temperature increases significantly which leads to accelerated valve stem and valve guide wear. The valve springs can also become overheated which takes the temper out of them.

I am a semi-newb and am waiting for my new tappets right now. Cylinder #1 is not firing once the bike warms up. Clearence is off so I hope it will fix the problem.

Here is my question - Where can I find a Tappet Wrench? I cannot find one right now. The ol' screwdriver and being careful works ok but I would like to do it right? Any one, Bueller?

Waiting for your new tappets ?.......You mean your new shims ??

Have you seen the tutorial on BassCliff's site ? It's in the left column of items next to the picture of Cliff's "Jessie".:)

My My do I sound like a tool. Yes. I meant the shim. The Zip Tie trick looks bad ass. Once my SHIMS get here I will try it with the tie's this weekend. Thanks!!! Next weekend I'll tackle the kaniburing actuator.

Here is a burn't exhaust valve that the previous owner managed to do, Ted

I just went over Cliff's valve check guide. I've looked over his site before, and honestly am completely blown away every time I read through one of his tutorials on how to do something.

Cliff, you are truly an asset to the GS community!!

You gave the newbs a great link to use to stock up on their blinker fluid. :D

I was looking for blinker fluid!!! Now I know, thanks!
Don't get your hopes up. They have been sold out of blinker fluid for quite a while.

I even tried to contact them to ask if there was another shipment on the way, but got no reply.

Based on their lack of response, I'm not sure how much I would order from them.
