I have been reading all of the threads on R/R replacement. I took my side cover off and someone has been in there before........not pretty! I ran the bike and the wires get VERY hot. They are wrapped in electrical wire and you can see it has melted some of it. I want to replace the R/R, but want something that will last. I read that some of you like the Ricks, but some of you dont. Has anyone done a replacement that is giving you good luck? Im not good with wiring so I would like something that would be easy enough for me to figure out. Thanks for your help. BTW I have a 83 GS750E.

First of all, which wires get hot? :-k

Heat in wires is caused by resistance. Since the resistance is supposed be be VERY LOW (virtually ZERO), you need to find the connectors that are causing the resistance and clean them.

Even better, just start at the front of the bike and clean EVERY connection point on your way to the tail light. :D

Hi,

Yes, duaneage has the best "bang for your buck" deal on the r/r unit. It's a heavy-duty unit that bolts right on. But how do you know if you need a new one? Clean your wiring harness (every connection, every ground, battery terminals, the fuse box, the ignition switch, from the headlight bucket to the tail light) and go through the Stator Papers to test your charging system. You'll find plenty of information on my little website and by searching the forum.

Thank you for your indulgence,

If you want a stock RR then I have a couple you can have very cheap... the better larger ones as found on the 80-1000G and others.

I also have the one we just used in our RR test that you can have for $50 plus shipping if you want that....

Personally I have the Mosfet ones fitted but a Honda one is cheaper than that.

Dan :)

Well I took everything out on that side and pulled it. The resin (or whatever it is) in the back of it is melted out in one spot and pouring onto the cooling fins. I smelled it and its the exact same smell that i smelled when it was running last. I guess I just figured that was a sign that it is shot. I know its not the stock one because all of the wires have been cut and are taped up. the one thats in there is a 5 wire and if I remember correctly there are 3 yellows, a black, and a red wire coming out of it. I will check all of the connections, just figured the R/R was bad or going bad. The battery also went dead when the thing started smoking.

IS it the wires that are heating up ...or is it the connectors ...?
One way to tell is to check soon after starting up from cold. See if the entire length of wire is heating up, or if it is heating up lots more right at the connector than it is further away from the connector.

If it is the connectors heating up mopre than it is the wire heating up , perhaps the connector can be cleaned up if the prtoblem is inbeteen the connections. Or mayhbe the problem is where the wires are crimped into the connector, which you are not going to be able to clean up, so need to replace the connectors. ANd the typical avaialbe crimp on connectors are not relaible, so is best to solder the wires fo rthe best long-term solution.

If it is the wires themselves heating up over the entire length of the wire. Then that is something like R/R failed or the stator failed or something. Ned to follow the staor papers to determin what has failed and replace that (rather than randomly buysing expensive parts).

Ok, thanks for the info. It looks like about 4 inches of the wire is torched. Whoever messed with this used those cheesy slide on connectors. Ill cut all this off, solder and shrink tube the whole thing. Its 2 of the yellow wires that are melted. The rest seem ok.

It's not usually the connector but the way it is crimped with an improper tool.

Hi,

Wow, the resin that's encasing the r/r circuit has melted? Yeah, I guess I would go ahead and replace it then. It must have been pretty hot to do that. But definitely clean up the wiring, connections, etc, and test further after installing the new r/r unit. Do you need a link to the Stator Papers?

Got a pic? It sounds like you may be describing the stator  (black resin, looks all black and melted, pulled the cover off, rick's, etc)

The stator is the round ring wound with copper wire behind the aluminum cover (don't mix up the bolts, some are different sizes)

The r/r is usually flat on one side and has cooling fins on the other. It looks like a large heatsink.

The advice and options you get depend upon the correct part. Besides, we love pics!

Sorry I thought i said I took the side cover off. The Stator is on the engine, this is under the battery. Dont scare me like that! lol

Hi,

Feel free to visit my little website (link in my signature file below). Start with the READ ME page. That's the "mega-welcome". Did I miss giving it to you? It's got tons of information, tips, links, etc.

Thank you for your indulgence,

Oh yea sorry, I did get that from you. I actually just used it to adjust my valves! Didnt see the "Stator Papers" though. BTW, thanks for putting all that info together!

Hi,

This is the first paragraph of the REAE ME page (the "mega-welcome"):

Dear fellow GS rider,

Let it be known that on this day you are cordially and formally welcomed to the GSR Forum as a Junior Member in good standing with all the rights and privileges thereof. Further let it be known that your good standing can be improved with pictures (not you, your bike)!

Perhaps you've already seen these, but I like to remind all the new members. In addition to the
CV carb rebuild series (CLICK HERE for the VM rebuild guide), I recommend visiting the In The Garage section via the GSR Homepage and check out the Stator Papers. There's also a lot of great information in the Old Q&A section. I have some documentation on my little BikeCliff website to help get you familiar with doing routine maintenance tasks (note that it is 850G-specific but many tasks are common to all GS bikes). Other "user contributed" informational sites include those of Mr. bwringer, Mr. tfb and Mr. robertbarr. And if your bike uses shims for valve adjustments, send an email to Mr. Steve requesting a copy of his Excel spreadsheet that helps you keep track of clearances, shim sizes and other service work.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

Thanks for the help everyone. Picked up a new R/R, cleaned my connections, now Im just waiting for the new one to get here. Fingers Crossed!!!!!

Did the first round of test as instructed in the stator papers. When I hook up the volt meter to the battery and run the bike at 2500 rpms im getting a reading of 12 volts. Doesnt seem right......

Great! Tell us about how you plan to ground and connect the hot wires? To where?

Did you test your stator output between all three leads? What were the readings?

Again, not trying to be a jerk or anything, but don't want you to miss a critical item and ruin your new r/r.

- JC

I was just going to hook everything up the way it is, except, instead of using spade connectors I was going to solder the connections and throw some shrink tube over them. Not good enough? If there is a better way let me know. Didnt take your comments as you being a jerk, no problems.

Hi,

Have you tested the stator yet? You should be getting more than 12v at the battery at 2500 rpm. Remember to set your volt/ohm meter to AC volts when testing the stator.

Have you cleaned all of your connections and grounds? Have you connected the ground wire from the r/r unit directly to the negative battery terminal? These two steps will help the charging system greatly.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff
