Resto : the "Belgian GS1000S"

Forum Sage
Hi,

i will be documenting my restoration of a GS1000 SN in this thread.

I am the kind of guy that does not restore a bike if it is still
something you would not be ashamed of to drive.

In Averbode, Belgium, i bought a heap of rust in August, 2012 for the 4 cowling brackets, the wiring harness, 1 sidepanel and tail piece that were still with the bike. Nice to have spare parts, right ?

No intention to restore the bike, because of the 'unobtainium' parts needed to complete this frame.

Yuk, this is some nasty stuff :

So i had no intention to restore the bike because some stuff is near impossible to find.

Well i had a number of lucky buys lately :)

Cockpit, has some damage on right hand side :

( note to self : i need to contact Larry, wonder how he patched up that very damaged cockpit on his incredibly nice GS1000S )

Someone needed to part with 10 brand new throttle cables and did not know what bike they are meant for :)

These are the original cables with the thick chrome pipe on it, not the imitation cables with the black plastic ones.

Bought these dirt cheap, just enough cables for all 5 of my 'S'-es :D

I also found an engine with the correct number.

"A perfect engine !" the seller stated.
Seller is a car mechanic so i hoped this to be true.

Feel the punchline coming ?
The engine was no good.

On first start, it was clear the crankshaft was bad ...

Now i keep reading about NOS crankshafts found for 100$,
but i cannot find one here... anyone got one ?
Otherwise i will refurbish this one ... cost minimally 500 euros ...

Engine is real dirty.
Thinking about ice blasting or soda blast to clean engine cases,
cylinder block and head.

And since this will be a project that will take a lot of time and $$$ i have already had the paintjob done.
Just looking at that will keep me motivated during the rebuild.

Oh and yes, that's a Dyna S in the picture :D
Invisible from the outside and a big improvement.
Will keep the original points and plate with the bike.

I have a feeling, this build will turn out very nicely....

Cheers

.

So, now i have all this stuff i think i should do the "Belgian GS1000S" justice - save it from being scrapped.

Since the frame is so corroded, and i have lots of new stuff to put on the bike, this will be a rebuild like i have not done before.

The chassis will be powdercoated.

I am currently working on rebuilding the front fork.
No piccies yet but the legs will be shine polished, new oil and seals, and progressive springs will make the fork just right :D
