A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Secondary coil resistance GS850

I have already sought some advice on coils and the responses were greatly appreciated.
What I now find is that the coils on the wreck of a GS850 bike that we are turning into a cafe racer has incorrect secondary resistance for electronic ignition.
Please don't tell me it should have been restored as it was just too far gone.
I can only assume that with 15 K Ohm secondary resistance that the existing coils came from a bike with contact points.
My manual states that the coils should have "About 32 K Ohm secondary resistance" when fitted a bike with electronic ignition.

As the primary resistance is shown as 4 OHM for both types of ignition I checked that and it is correct.
Can I use the 15 K Ohm coils or must they be 32 K Ohm?

I believe the 32K number includes the resistor caps, which are 5K each, leaving about 22K for the coil itself.

If the two coils match each other, I would go ahead and run them.

.

I measured a few stock coils....primary 4 ohms. Without plug caps, the secondary measured about 12kohms . The caps seem to vary from 5k each to 10k each...so over the plug caps the secondary would be between 22 to 32kohms. New ngk plug caps cost about $5 each and are a good investment.
