    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Short + Solenoid = solution?

As you can see from this post and few related ones, my 79 GS 1000e is pristine except for some electrical gremlins. A dealer identified the problem with the short as resulting from a bad DYNA ignition coil that fried. Dyna agreed enough to cover it as a warranty item (only about 100 miles on it), but I had my doubts. Now that the new Dyna coil is in, the dealer says that there is an intermittent problem with the Solenoid- and there is a new one on the way. I mention this to everyone so that they can brainstorm and maybe learn from the problem, not because I am seeking a specific answer from the group. If anyone has had my symptoms (repeatedly/instantly blowing ignition fuse) it might be helpful.
Not sure if the dealer has it right, we'll see. And no, I just cant make the time to wrench it myself.

Problem like this would make me suspect connections in right switch, namely the kill switch wiring. Pressing the starter button puts more load on ignition fuse (another 3 amps) so maybe your solenoid is to blame if it happens then. But lots of other things could be contributing to your problem. Me, I'd try bypassing the kill switch, but your dealer is unlikely to risk doing this.
 
They CLAIM that the kill switch was their 1st suspect, and that they checked it thouroghly. Something tells that the solenoid will not completely solve it- but we'll see later this week

Instantly upon what? As soon as key on? As soon as hit starter button?

It was happening intermittently last fall, while the bike was running. Recently, the fuse then started to blow instantly whenever the kill switch was switched to run, and the ignition was on--- regardless of what else was on. Dealer claims that the short/fuse blowing problem was remedied as soons they put in the new coil from Dyna, and that makes some sense to me. The solenoid was not a problem before, so I was surprised to hear that it went bad. We'll see.
 
If anyone is interested in an update, I have bike back from the dealer. In summary, they replaced the DYNA coil, installed a new starter solenoid, and claim that they tested every connection in the wiring harness diligently. After charging the battery, it fired right up for them, and no fuse issues. I have ridden about 75 mi, with no issues. In fact, it is running great. So, for now, I will call it fixed. At least as fixed as any mint 35 year old bike w only 10k miles on it can be! Thanks to all for the brainstorming and coaching.
